Single Axle/Dual Axle Conversion
 

OK,
I have a single axle truck that was a former Yellow Freight truck. I can see what looks like the mounts for an add on set of axles.
It has a pintal mounted on a cross member and some female receivers on the rear of the truck.
There is an air switch on the dash for 1,2,3 axles.
What is the proper name for this addable axle and where can I find one?

Jifflock or a Joe Dog.. you don't want either of them!!! They were crummy and dangerous when they were new! add the slop than years and miles add, and its just flat out dangerous!! I'm happy to say that I don't have to drive them anymore.

Fozzy's right. At Roadway we had that set up, they were called Jifflocks or Converter Dolly. A jifflock doubled as a dolly for pulling doubles and a rear axle when pulling a long box.

When you are pulling doubles the switch on the dash would be on 1, for 1 axle. When converted to a tandem axle the switch was set to 2, so the jiff's brakes were functional. When you removed the jifflock from the tractor putting the switch to 3 would release the pental valve so you could pull away from the jiff.

When I left Roadway they were in the process of doing away with them. I would call a roadway or Yellow terminal to see if you could buy one. I'm sure they would probably sell you one of the old ones they don't use any more.
