Driving experience for CDL

In the US, how many years of driving experience is required in order to apply for a CDL A license ? For eg, here in Alberta, it's 2 years before one can apply for a CDL learner's permit, and in British Columbia, it's 3 years ( presumably, as driving conditions are more challenging there due to the mountainous terrain ).

i dont think there is one. (dont hold me to that) I got my class a permit at 18 so that would only give me 2 years.

in new york state you have to be at least 21yrs old in order to obtain a class "a" but you can get a class "c" or "b" at 18 for intrastate only. I would assume that is nationwide as the laws for a cdl are supposed to be federal but don't hold me to that.

You can get a CDL class 'A' at 18 in Missouri.

As far as I know there is no specific driving experience required to take the CDL test and get the license. Most states allow drivers to get their CDL at 18 years of age. You will need to take a written and road test in most states. You will need to be at least 21 years old to driver interstate and most carriers won't hire you until you are at least 23 years old, some may want you to be 25. It is more for insurance purposes. You can get the license, but may not find a job without being of a certain age. Most carriers require drivers to either attend a driving school or have at least 1-2 years of experience. There are a few who have training programs and will put you with a trainer for a period of time until they feel you are competent to handle an 18 wheeler.
