Running hard

Some guys like to run hard 3000 - 3500 miles per week
I am not pressed for money, got no expenses
Is it possible to get into a routine of just 300 to 400 miles a day for 7 days for a total of 2100 to 2800 mile per week
Just actual driving time of 8 hour a day
Try to make it like a fixed schedule like working overnights.
I like working evening to morning and sleeping morning to afternoon.
Does this only happen on dedicated accounts?
:D

Generally speaking, if you are wanting a predictable schedule, then trucking is probably not for you. As far as the hours you want to drive, (i.e.; driving the "graveyard run", I think that is an excellent idea.

I drove at nights every chance I got. Safer, fewer clusterf*@ks, better quality of dirvers, no clammouring for a parking spot at a truck stop.

But you will have to balance that with dock times for the shipper and the consignee!! After you gain some experience, then you may have a shot at a decent dedicated run that offers predictability and brings you home everyday.

have you ever thought of gas, gas haulers go round the clock, always looking for guys to drive nights, as half of a slip seat, hope this helps.

Yeah my body clock is adjusted to grave yard shift
been working it for sometime now

How could this work for recievers
I guess they all don't have eary morning drop times?
Nothing is perfect and I expect not too much
that way I will not be frustrated all the time
but be happy when things go as planned.
I was thinking about tankers
seems to be a good gig from what I've read on some post
are you happy pulling gas?

I worked that deal out with my company, but I don't think it would have been possible without first establishing myself. On the other hand establishing myself only took about 1 1/2 years.

As it is now I take either 2 or 3 900 mile trips a week. Every trip will be to Atlanta (350 miles) and every backhaul will go to Memphis (100 miles the other direction). Then back home to pick up another load. I will be home in one form or another nearly every day. Sometimes I get to sleep at home and sometimes just to spend the afternoon. I always start Sunday night. I do not have a dedicated account, just several in the same area.

Yeah. It's possible, but probably not at first.

Just remember that the Reason a company wants a product delivered By Truck from Point A to Point B is that they want it there the quickest way possible.

Have you thought about LTL linehaul? They run mostly at night. One of the local bakeries around here runs nights, less than 400 miles I think.

Must be a really big bakery outfit.

happyhookin 07-26-2007 10:52 AM

Yeah they are, Interstate Brands/Meritta, a national company. A far cry from a local bakery I guess :)

Also known as "HOSTESS" :D

The Company operates 52 bakeries throughout the United States and employs more than 30,000 people. From these strategically dispersed bakeries, the Company’s sales force delivers baked goods to more than 200,000 food outlets on approximately 9,000 delivery routes. The Company’s products are distributed throughout the United States, primarily through its direct route system and approximately 1,100 Company-operated thrift stores, and to some extent through distributors.

where in OH are you located? There are several Foodservice companies that run nights.

Drew10 07-26-2007 11:50 AM

Alot of companies, have drop yards through out the state, they use daycab or small sleeper trucks to run trailors from drop yard to drop yard, they do this 24hrs a day. Usually paid a salary. Slip seat trucks.
My company has many drop yards throughout Ohio, Ive seen the "shuttle"drivers quite frequently in the drop yards and throughout Ohio, just moving trailors. Some deliver the freight, some just moving it across the state, to another drop yard.

Where are you in Ohio?

nightbright1 07-26-2007 06:57 PM

I'm in Akron Ohio

You are in a pretty good spot, you might give Werner a call, see what your chances are of getting that kind of job, with them.

We have dropyards in Girard, Archibald, Columbus, Just to name a few. Terminal is located in Springfield. There are many dedicated accounts you may be able to get into also.
They work the "shuttle" drivers pretty good, Just one trip from Girard to Archibald and back would be about 8hrs work, including drop and hook time, fuel etc.

Sounds like dedicated or local to me.

Something like that is probably possible doing dedicated. I run 2500 miles a week over 5 days, regular pickups and deliveries, weekends off. One of the reasons I could get on this was because of the low miles. I do more on the days I work than you're wanting to do, but not so much more as to put your goal out of reason.

It's really all about where you live, and where the freight runs. There are guys running this same freight as an OTR job, who sleep at one of the stops during the week, and drive home on weekends. This is all highly variable, and highly specific to where you live, so unless you live near me, I can be of no help trying to hook you up with something.

More like delivery by truck is the only way to get the product there , because most of the places I deliver to don't have rail spurs and rail docks or places for air craft to land and un-load. ,and delivery boat is pretty tough in land locked areas of the country
