Noise restrictions

On a slightly different tack, I find it absolutely ridiculous that city authorities who have no compunction in prohibiting the use of jakes within city limits, seem to be completely stone-deaf to the massive sonic assault raised by bikers who plough down residential neighbourhoods, creating a massive din. If jakes, which, by no stretch of anyone's imagination can be claimed to be used for the purpose of pleasure, can be banned, why not those bikers, who do it purely for their selfish pleasure without any consideration for the people and homes around them ? Don't get me wrong....i quite like bikes, and own a BMW K1200LT....but it's pretty much silent compared to the other stuff on the roads.

One other thing that works against us truckers, don't get me wrong I love the sound, are the guys who go roaring thru town jake brakes blaring and they have strait pipes. While this sounds very cool you have to admit it is extremely loud.

Probably because certain town roads are only available to trucks do to weight and height restrictions. Whereas motorcycles have the option of any road they please you dont have a major jam up of motorcycles on one particular road, whereas you do trucks.

Thats why the restriction on jake brakes and also because trucks travel these roads to get to interstates at all hours of the night , no one likes to hear jake brakes, especially on a flat road when traffic is minimal at late hours.

On the other hand, being I've ridden motorcycles for 25 years, Loud pipes dont save lives, knowing how to ride properly and wearing proper gear at all times........does save lives.

I understand where you are coming from. It does seem like a certain amount of prejudice against trucks.

Sounds like to me the argument here is not that trucks should be allowed to use jakes in town but rather if you are going to have a law due to noise then it should be uniformly applied to all types of vehicles.

Years ago (too many for me to want to remember) I had a car with a pretty loud exhaust. It was 100% legal, but it was loud. A local cop pulled me over and was standing next to my drivers window in the process of writing me a ticket over it. Of course, I was arguing with him about the fact the exhaust was legal. About that time a bike came past us with the loudest exhaust I'd heard in years. The cop handed my license back and told me to have a nice day.

I understaind completley and I feel all trucks should have jakes mufflers as required in CO. Now a question, if you are going down a hill (in an area that say's no jakes) and loose your brakes are you not going to turn on your jakes? and if you get a ticket would you not fight it?

Same reason Illegal Aliens get benefits. Screwed up lawmakers.

I agree 100%, and Ive ridden bikes for almost 30 years. I actually like the sound of the load pipes, however when the bike is ridden irresponsibly and without regard to others thats when they are a problem. Even on the highway load pipe bikes have done more to startle me, when they come up on me at high speed and come flying around me in a blurr. Even the quieter "crotch rocket" ninjas.
Ride responsibly, that will save more lives. Yours especially

I also like the sounds of the unmuffled jakes, My opinion though it took to many Bad apples Jaking trough the cities, to prohibit there use.

Alot of the "No Jakes" sign will also say "except in emergencies". Even if they dont, I think the city kitties will understand, but they may wonder why you lost your brakes.

I never use my jake brake in a town anyway
