This guy didn't even notice that his trailer was missing and the top of his cab was also missing? I can't believe this guy wasn't issued a ticket. He must have some ability to concentrate on his GPS if he didn't notice that he had lost the top of his tractor and his trailer.

i40shortie 07-01-2007 01:17 AM

I have 2 questions:

1. Will this be grounds for termination for most trucking companies?

2. Would this be placed in his DAC report?

one answer yes

GMAN 07-01-2007 01:39 AM

This driver should never be allowed behind the wheel of a 4 wheeler, much less one with 18 wheels.

Ridge Runner 07-01-2007 02:02 AM

This fool would not even notice if he was in a roll-over.     :P

GMAN 07-01-2007 02:13 AM

The roof of his truck was being peeled back and he didn't even notice? Then once his truck was made into a convertible, he keeps going to rip his trailer apart. He hits so hard that the trailer disconnects from the 5th wheel.....and he didn't notice? Either the 5th wheel or the king pin broke allowing the trailer to drop.......AND HE DIDN'T NOTICE??????? :?

How can you "not" notice that your trailer had just been ripped off and the roof of your cab peeled back? Talk about "brain dead" I wonder if they did a drug test on this bozo.

Mr. Ford95 07-01-2007 03:00 AM

I'm with GMAN, how can this guy not be issued a citation for it?? Failure to pay full time attention is what comes to mind here. Doofus, straight up.

(it was a sunny day in Dover NH @ 10:18).....driver Oneloadshy (into cell phone while looking at GPS)..."yeah baby I'm sorry, I know you're right you always".....uhhhuuuh...."sorry babe, musta been those dang potholes in this town".....what was that baby?...oh yea"..."hmmm ya know, this truck sure accelerates better now, wonder why"

:)

bridan 07-01-2007 03:12 AM

whats realy funny is that , the red shoe barn is about 1/2 a mile down the road from where the bridge is rotflmao ,, but he did not notice it until then

Double R 07-01-2007 03:12 AM

Less than a mile away from his destination of Goss International, Peiffer was riding down Broadway, checking his GPS system to get a better idea of where the company was located.
Well golly gee wizz, according to all the "new" drivers, a GPS is the best thing to have in your truck. Who needs a trucker's atlas and a cell phone to CALL AND ASK FOR DIRECTIONS when you have a GPS unit that was made for use in a car!

fireman932003 07-01-2007 03:16 AM

Does someone feel a draft?????

Yep, and how many times have I and others made this same point about being alittle too wrapped up in a GPS????

It only takes one occasion like this to wreck your life, someone elses, and possibly even to completely ruin a career.

You can make the point until you are blue in the face. Fact remains, the new breed relies too much on high tech gadgets. I have come to the conclusion that the CDL mills no longer teach basic map reading skills and that company trainers teach how to use high tech gadgets. There is nothing wrong with having a laptop(I have one) and a GPS unit in the truck BUT you still need to know how to read a map and be able to call and ask fror directions. Most of the GPS units on the market a for cars, not big trucks. I know of only one GPS(stand alone, not CO-Pilot) that is made for big trucks but it cost right now about $1100.00.

cclarke1268 07-01-2007 11:42 AM

Forget the gps, a trucker atlas, or a cb, or a phone call the sipper/recvr
would have prevented this If you cant tell a bridge or over pass high line wire, or whatever looks too low you should't be driving a truck. Hell at 9'
that would hit about somewere around the visor, I'd been hittin the floorboard at that height. This trucker wasn't just paying attn to his/her
gps, c'mon I don't beleive that for a second. Think about a 6' tall person
standing at your truck door? (my two grown sons are over 6' and can't stand on the ground and look in the side glass of my truck ) A yard stick taller than that would be where??

Double R 07-01-2007 11:46 AM

"I wasn't even paying attention. I didn't even see this thing, completely," said Peiffer, who has worked for the Ohio-based trucking company JKAT Enterprises for only three months.
He was to busy looking at the GPS unit to notice the sign, the yellow flashing lights, the overpass. Didn't even relize that he lost the trailer and made sunroof in the tractor until AFTER he came out the other side.

You are right about that, I have never used a GPS, I only rely on my maps and directions from the customer. I have found that most customers can give you better directions and can usually tell you which routes to avoid.

I love all the new gadgets too, but I guess that comes from starting trucking before cell phones, quallcoms, and laptops. Call the customer.. but I hate the recorded directions I guess I just write slow. Wonder what these guys would do if they had to find a payphone without gps to call the customer

When I learned to drive in 1998 at the age of 23, we did not have QC, GPS units and cell phones in the trucks. The Allied agent that I worked for got the directions for you and if we had any problems out on the road, we used pay phones, and a truckers atlas(just like the old timers taught me when they trained me drive). I like the new toys too but I don't rely on them to do the job for me.

cclarke1268 07-01-2007 12:20 PM

Just goes to show there is no replacement for good ol' common sense

What's a payphone?

I gotta agree with you also on the CDL mills,(and everything else you posted on this topic ) I think there is something goin on with them, I don't know what i missed by not goin to trucking school, but I don't think it was much. I had my class A and was driving trucks before they had the CDL's I started in '87 but I didn't have a cell phone until around '97 or so.

boneebone 07-01-2007 12:54 PM

I think he was waiting for his GPS to tell him to stop, before he actually did. Hope this guy switched professions after this, don't need idiots like him on the road.

OOOOHHHHH I think he switched professions allright. He's standing in line at the job hut behind that guy which drove for U.S.A logistics (the one at the tunnel) remember

I guess cops cant legally issue tickets for stupidity! I just cant believe he didnt realize his roof as well as trailer was missing!

Drew10 07-01-2007 03:30 PM

Extracted from the article:

We were just on break talking about how many people run into this thing," said Roland Bougie, of Rochester, who was working construction on a house nearby

Indeed, trucks fail to clear the old railroad bridge often, even though several signs alert drivers to its low 9 foot 6 inch clearance. William Carroll, a resident of nearby Winter Street, said trucks run into the bottom of the bridge at least once a month, but Friday's accident was a standout.
The city of Dover apparently notices the "trend" in trucks hitting the bridge. Even though the bridge is marked with the height restriction, it is apparently not adequete.

Im not trying to defend the driver, he is clearly at fault, and admitted to not paying attention to his driving. GPS can be a wonderful thing, but you better be using only as a supplement to your "navigation". Even if he failed to see the signs, he had to know he was going under a bridge (you would think, anyway) and 9 foot 6 inch is so short that a reasonable driver shouldnt need signs to tell him that he aint gonna fit.

Since he continued to his consignee, he apparently doesnt check his mirrors much for the location of his trailer while making turns. I would hazard a guess, that 100% of the drivers on this forum, check their mirrors while making turns, to observe the track of the trailer.

He was not issued a citation in connection with the accident
(I cannot believe he wasnt ticketed)

It would be interesting to know what his company did with him. Althought it should be pretty obvious.

Good grief man. That just goes to underscore what us geezers have been telling these new kids about those stupid GPS gizmos. Use your atlas, stupid, and even if your atlas says the route is OK, you gotta look at them little yellow signs!!!

K.POP 07-02-2007 04:25 PM

you'd think the blinking lights would told him something. guess he was color blind

No matter what kind of high-tech gadget you have, YOU CAN'T FIX STUPID!
