Parkhurst Mfg

Before my discharge from the U.S. Army in 1967, I began writing letters to various trucking companies and state associations. The Missouri Bus and Truck Association Information Bulletin said that I was available, and they received two replies. Subsequently, I was hired by Parkhurst Mfg of Sedalia, MO to replace their OTR driver who was retiring. Parkhurst had a new Crackerbox GMC with a 6 cylinder Detroit and ten speed. I picked up a new flatbed at the Dorsey factory, Elba, AL. Parkhurst made truck platforms primarily for farm straight-trucks, and utility trailers and bumper hitches for the rental market. The hitches went to a repair yard in Hollywood, FL. The platforms went to dealers in places such as Corpus Christi, TX and Rochester, MN. After one year, I quit Parkhurst for a union job.

Just got hired to my first trucking job - a regional flatbedding job that will keep me close to home but still counts as "OTR." Lots of drivers at this company have been there for at least a couple of years, which bodes well for me.

Whatever company you choose as your first, plan to stay there for at least a year! Job hoppers have alot tougher time getting hired anywhere.
