Trucker's Jargon
Hello there,
I am a student of Teaching English as a Foreign language and I have to design lessons for foreign truck drivers who wish to work in England. I need to know what jargon/specialist English and American that you use in your work. Also the situations you may come across daily as a truck driver. Of course you will need to order food etc, but, what other things are common in your line of work. I would appreciate your help :D Thanks in advance, Joanna in the sunny south of Crete Greece [/b] |
Lumpers are people truckers are forced to pay to unload their trailer. Some are actually employees of the receiver, others work for an independent lumper company.
There are slang words which are used in the U.S. Much of it is used on the CB radio. A CB is a Citizens Band radio which most truckers use in their trucks. |
It is also important to note that in the U.S drivers of Asian decent are not well known as top notch drivers. So if a near collision happens and the driver of the other vehicle is from Asia you might hear the other driver exclaim, "That was a close one, that guy was DWO." This means Drive While Oriental" an expression that allows for relief of stress and frustration. Good Luck with the course. Bill
