backing up

just a wondering if i'm the only one here that has trouble backing up bobtail ? i have a slick disk, so i dont unhook to grease 5th.. after driving 3 thou mi's every week, every now & then i'll unhook to do a few things to trailer or tractor. when backing one day last month into bay to get tires on. i kept backing as if i had trailer hooked up, but it wasnt. this isnt the first time this happened to me. strange looking out of my drivers side window & seeing no trailer, but backing as if one was there.. some of the mechanics got a laugh watching me zig-zag across the parking lot...

LOL Awww you just had a bad day Heavy. We've all had days like that although some would never admit to it. In someone's posting on the board they were telling about how they have trouble in their own car. I know I've tried using the clutch in my own vehicle, and it's an automatic. LOL I've also tried turning the steering wheel as if I had a trailer attached. So see you're not alone. Take care. Drive safe everyone. :)

I'm forever double clutching.
It's a real wakeup...when I try to "float" a gear. :P

You think it's bad trying to back bobtail. Try hooking a little 16 foot horse trailer onto a pickup truck and backing it up after you've been used to 48 or 53 foot trailers... Talk about embarassing...

Sucker gets away from you so quick it'll make your head spin!

The bobtail thing is actually pretty common from talking to other drivers.

I remember one night driving home at 4 am in 5speed car and I wasn't double clutching, and it was freaking me out that I wasn't doing it. After a few shifts I caught myself and bribed the hamster to get back on the wheel. I was in trucking school at the time so I had to double clutch. Oh...I also had to remeber that reverse in my car is the opposite than in the truck...those early mornings really kick me in the ass sometimes.
