i found this in the wikipedia site it might be useful for new drivers .

scroll down to the section on the BRAKE PEDAL. the explanation of how the treadle applies the service brake by lowering air pressure at the spring section is inaccurate. this modulated brake application only occurs when the primary air pressure has been lost

up to that point, excellent basic description of the brakes...
