Eaton 10 sp, and 13sp.

What's the difference between these two? ( Besides 3 more gears) Do they shift in the same pattern? I ask because I have a road test coming up, and I've only driven a 10.

What gear would you start out empty? Where does the splitter come into play at? I explained that I never drove a 13 sp, but they said I could handle it. It's in a Volvo. Thanks! :D

13 and 18 speeds share the same pattern as a 9 speed.

The biggest difference between a 9 and 10 speed is going into high range. On a 9/13 speed you come towards you and up. (about where 7th is on a 10 speed)

It will depend on how heavy you are but generally you can start in 2nd or 3rd on a 9/13 speed.

Where you get the 13 gears at is that on the top half you can split each hole. Think of it like 1/2 gears. The splitter is a little red button on the side of the shift knob.

Try this link for a detailed description of an 18 speed. The directions I gave can be followed exactly for the 13 speed only the little Grey button on the 18 is Red on the 13.

With the 13 the top gears {lever up} can be split {red button fwd, low / red button back, high}. You can run the top gears {lever up} in low range {button fwd} and use the splitter for the last gear{ button back} for a ten speed. Or you can split every top gear if your loaded. Its a fun transmission. :D
If you get lost  , go for a higher gear and work your way down.

The 13 speed is an H Pattern, with a side splitter. You use the side splitter to give you 1/2 gears once you are in 5th and working up. Shifting with the side split gives you 5 lo then 5-hi, then you shift to 6th-lo to 6-hi ect. I find this is a much smoother shift when loaded.
