Hazmat

What is the backgroundcheck and fingerprinting for in hazmat testing. Is it to make sure your not a terrorist or what?
Newbie, just don't understand. Are there qualifications and disqualifications?

It's a threat assessment. Terrorist is one of them. Having things like a like arson, rape, robbery, etc. are the others if it's under 7 years old or 5 years from prison release date. Things like murder, treason, explosives, etc. will disqualify you right away.

There is a brochure I got from DMV that has the full list.

it is bs in my opinion, if a terrorist wants a truck, he will just steal it. he wont go to the trouble of getting a cdl and a hazmat endorsment, the government is not used to dealing with these kind of animals and they dont know what to do, so they just go with every lame idea they hear, they figure doing anything is better than doing nothing. its like the radiation detectors at the scales. like the terrorist is going to go through the scales. you have to remember, they expect to die during their mission, so they have no reason to worry about doing it legally

What about terrorists using legit CDLS and legit endorsements to ship bomb making materials?

I think that's what it is really about. It is good policy in my opinion.

.I doubt it but who knows? so if I'm a risk, they can trust me until my license comes up for renewal, then I have to prove I'm not a terrosist, so just use people who already have hazmat, it just doesnt make sense to me, maybe check people getting it for the first time, but not people who have had it for 20 or 30 years.BUT it doesnt matter what any of us think anyway, it's a done deal

As long as we're talking about this, how do I go about renewing mine? How often do you have to renew?

I think so it's every 4 years. Not sure though.

I hate to say this....but its really little more than another "business opportunity" being exploited under the aegis of the "Patriot Act". Think about who gets the money and how many drivers have to carry a hazmat endorsement. It amounts to virtually BILLIONS of $$ in someones pockets and out of ours.

I carried a very high security clearance for years in the Army, and the FBI has a substantial dossier on me as a result of that security clearance, not to mention the fact that my father was a nuclear officer in the Army as well. But yet despite that and the fact that they rapidly renew my passport.... gee, I get to pay some more money to some "buttmunch" to get the X next to the T on my CDL.....

Its all about the money, thats all.

Anyone who thinks that the only person who would steal or hijack a truck with hazmat in it is going to try to get an endorsement to a CDL....is a moron. The one's that hijacked the airlines didn't bother getting multi engine jet licenses..... gee, go figure.

And, since they are willing to give "certain immigrants" a 2 year waiver on the issue....alot of good it does to make us jump through hoops.

"Government Intelligence".....an oxymoron at best.

Yeah, and they never paid much attention in class about landing an aircraft or even learned how to land one. Now the gummit is all so-called smarter to that now and it's supposed to set off bells and whistles (har, har). I'll bet on the lotto first and have better luck...
Anyways, I went and paid my $91 for a background check today so I can haul freaking hazmat. Made my check out to Bush Co.
I got to take the test for free though!

DaWolffe 01-22-2007 01:32 PM
