Can someone give me the detailed goods on what exactly LTL entails, the pros & cons ? Also, which are the best LTL companies to drive for, based as I'm going to be in Pennsylvania ?

You will be delivering,and picking up freight in your area. Lots of multi stops. I think,any LTL freight job would be good. All have good benefits,decent hours,and good home time. :P If you do get hired on with an LTL company,they may work you part time,and then work your way up.

IT ALL DEPENDS ON WHAT TYPE OF TERMINAL YOU WORK OUT OF OR WHAT COMPANY YOU WORK FOR. I DRIVE FOR ABF FREIGHT HERE IN OHIO WE ARE ONLY A ROAD DRIVER TERMINAL (NO CITY DRIVERS I.E. PICKUPS AND DELIVERY) WITH ROAD DRIVING YOU ARE USUALLY OUT ONE OR TWO DAYS AND STAY IN A MOTEL WHEN IN BED. CITY DRIVING IS MOSTLY SHIFT WORK AND SOME DOCK DUTIES LIKE I SAID DEPENDS ON WHAT COMPANY YOU CHOOSE TO WORK FOR.

Thanks for your response. If I may ask, what kind of stuff do you haul ? How many pickups & drops do you need to do every day ? How much of it is drop & hook ? How many miles do you drive on an average ? How much hand-bombing is involved ? Is it mainly with pallet jacks or do you also need to handbomb floor loads ?

I run line-haul. Its all night- driving. I rarely even have to open my own doors if they are swing doors, just drop and hook. I work 5 nights a week and get around 2500 miles/wk pay is excellent. Im usually home only weekends. P+d drivers have it rougher in my point of view, some dont have ac and some hand- unloads, tight docks galore and unloading in the middle of the road. But you are home daily.

AS A ROAD DRIVER I WAS TOLD WHEN I STARTED BY THE TERMINAL MANAGER THAT DRIVERS DRIVE THEY DON'T FUEL AND THEY DON'T LUMP FREIGHT WE ONLY BREAK OUR TRAILERS DOWN WHEN THE YARD JOCKEY IS NOT THERE. THE ONLY STOPS WE HAVE ARE AT OUR TERMINALS. IT IS TRULY A SWEET GIG
