2 years of PART-TIME driving = ?
 

Ok, I am a few years ahead of myself, but I am curious as to how insurance companies or potential trucking firms weigh part-time experience.

Example: Assuming I have a clean DAC over the next 2 years, but I only accumulate 60,000 miles driven (current HIGH projection), do I get full credit?

Two years seems to be the magic year. Both for the qualifying drivers and trucking firms getting their $$$$$ break from the insurance companies for hiring drivers.

Bottom Line: Is the 2 year scenario all about the "time" or "milage/time" combined?

Also, I am only talking about LOCAL driving work/experience.

I dont know about other companies, but I almost never can count part time experience as anything. Unless you are getting at least 1000 miles every week.

Sell it off as"2 years experience". The recruiter wants another driver, and the driver wants the job- everyone wins! 8)

When I was in school and driving part time for a company, I used that as experience towards my OTR job, not that I needed it :shock: :lol: :lol:

Gotcha on the OTR conversion. I expected that.

But what about local firms? Do they get a break from the insurance man hence creating more opportuties (local) for me.

I average between 300-500 mile during the week (Mostly on the weekend).

the ins. cos dont ask how much actual driving experience yoiu actually have or how skilled you are.... as others said, 2 years is 2 years regardless of what hometime you have...

There seems to be some mixed opinions here, but I catch the drift.

Sure....you could always say that you have 2 full years of experience. Then it would come down to what your employer said when the company who was hiring you called them for a reference. Almost 100% of the time when someone calls your employer for a job reference and asked if you were full time or part time, they will tell the truth.

I don't lie, so no worries there mate. That is why I am asking the questions. Again, there seems to be mixed opinions. I think the reason I got the my latest part-time gig without the normal experience is because of my overall (whole person) profile (work history..etc..).
I was surprised that the company hired me, as I explained my inexperience. Things are working out great so far.

Still comes down to supply and demand (and company standards)..

Bottom Line: Lying usually catches up with you, so I don't go there.

I understand about the mixed answers. That is probably because many companies have different hiring standards. I can really only go by what we do over here. And for us, part time just doesnt work as experience. They are pretty strict about it. Here is where it gets really weird. We do have a few part time jobs over here that I hire for. When I put a driver on it I have to warn him. If he does that job too long and then wants to go OTR for us, if his otr experience falls out of our range, he wont be able to run OTR for us even though hes already working for us. Go figure.

Sheepdancer is correct (as far as TMC goes too). TMC doesn't count part time or local driving as experience towards an OTR position.
