Recruiting Military Drivers
 

In my transition program in the army, they gave me a magazine called "G.I. Jobs". There are several trucking companies advertising in it. They are:

Crete
Werner
J.B. Hunt
Swift
Prime
CRST
Schneider

I looked into the websites of each company before I found this board. They paint a pretty picture. After hearing all of the stories from people who have worked for the majority of these companies, I am kind of pissed. Crete sounds like it might be ok, but all of the other ones seem to screw people all the time. These companies are actively trying to lure soldiers into their organizations, banking on the idea that they don't know any better. I wonder how many soldiers who went to war for their country came home and lost their a$$ on one of their "fleece" puchase deals? Thank god for this board, I didn't do 3 tours overseas to get pimped around by some mega carrier.

I guess I'd suggest going off the list completely. Try CFI or TMC. Depends if you want flatbed or dryvans. The ones that advertise the most are the ones you want to work for the least. Ask them for their "TURN-OVER RATE and go with the one with the lowest number. I believe SWIFT has one of the highest.

Another reason they like you guys is that youre used to 'hurry up and wait'. Thats exactly what youll get with most companies...You guys arent the usual whiners and quitters and used to taking someones crap. The best thing next to robots wich they have not gotten good models in yet.

What ONE means, is that if you're coming out of the military services, you're more used to taking orders and not questioning them than anyone from the general public. It's the "chain-of-command" thing that you get used to after a few years. And, being new to civilian trucking, they can give you the things others won't do and get away with it for a while. That's why they want you.

I guess I should have tried harder to convey my sarcasm. I put up with enormous amounts of crap. I'm getting out cause I am sick of it. I'm sure as hell not gonna start all over doing it with someone else.

H. O. Wolding was giving full scholarships for their CDL training school for veterans. Their website still lists "veterans' scholarships," but doesn't give details, so I don't know if it is still a full scholarship or not. There may be other companies that do this.

Acranger pretty much you are going to find out like I have that military service doesn't mean much in the trucking world. Veterans preference means they will hire you or I just as fast as they would anyone else, with the same low pay rate. I have 3.5 years driving experience but due to the fact I spent four years in the army every company I talked to so far wants me start all over again. Its sad to think that they can use the fact you were willing to serve your country as another way to screw you over. How much time do you have before you get out?
