CB's

hey,

so i have a cheap radio shack cb i want to eventually upgrade. what is a good cb that has good distance? good sound quality, without all the extra crap that goes along. im looking for something that can go 8 to 10 miles. any thoughts or any thing u might like. i hear cobra complaints with sound quality. is that true?

Well how much do you wanna spend :?:

If you want to spend $200 Magnum S-3 hands down the best 10-meter AM only radio I've owned.

I hate Cobras they're garbage.
Now watch 50 people come in here and say something like "I've had my Cobra for [insert long time period here] and it's given me no problems"

My philosophy is: invest more $ once and be done.

By the way, you wanna buy a cobra 29 LTD classic from me? Big final, echo board, freedom faceplate. $100

Yep, you were precisely correct CD

Buy the Cobra 29 get it tuned and peaked by a good radio tech. Good little radio and all you'll ever need. DOn't let guys like CD talk you into elaborate radio setups. Echo, roger beeps and the like serve absolutely no purpose but to annoy other drivers, and why on Earth would you want to do that?

Uturn2001 10-07-2006 04:54 AM

Your total setup will do more for you than spending big bucks on a radio.

A good antenna properly tuned to your radio with high quality coax will increase your range and quality of transmission and reception a lot more than a high dollar radio will.

Add to that have your radio properly tuned also will do wonders.

i guess I will be the first one to say that I had a Cobra when I ran the road and got many compliments on how well it sounded. As u-turn said it all depends on the other pieces-dont buy cheap antennas or coax.

CB's are a waste of money as far as I'm concerned. Have something cheap for those rare times when you actually need it. I wouldn't spend much money on one.

I mean, who really cares about sound quality and range when it's mostly just a bunch of foul-mouthed yokels yelling and burping at each other with echo on their voice?

Ya know there's really nothing wrong about the CB radio, except for one thing:

Truck drivers only use 1 channel.

There's 39 other channels to pick from.

If we were smart, we'd all decide on a band plan. A channel for monitoring bears, brokedowns and traffic tie ups. A channel for the rambos to duke it out and make noise with their echo, noise toys etc (actually that already occurs on Ch 6, 11, 15, 26, & 28, all AM modes).
A channel for truckers to engage in open ended small talk. A group of channels for SSB DX (which is already 1 Upper, 33 & 34 Lower, 38 Lower, and 40 Upper), and a group of channel for drivers to engage in more private matters between one another.

But no, we have to be idiots and do it all on ONE damn channel.

Great idea, but it wouldn't make a difference. The CB is like an unmoderated internet forum. Trolls act like idiots because they can and nobody can do anything about it but ignore it and choose not to participate. But there's always a couple of people who can't resist jumping in and arguing, and that's what keeps the trolls happy.

I occasionally listen to the CB to see what's going on, but more often than not I hear what sounds like the same people talking the same crap everywhere I go. After a few minutes, I turn it off.
If I had to pay for my own CB, I wouldn't bother to have one.
