Question about powershifting
 

Quick question. If you're powershifting (shifting without pressing the clutch) and you accidently skip a gear, (for example, you go from 1st to 4th instead of 2nd), will it still shift into 4th, or will it tear the transmission up? (I know if it shifts from 1st to 4th, it will probably choke down, but will the transmission be ruined?)

I think so I want to use the clutch until I get good with shifting the gears and putting it in the right one.

it would not ruin the transmission, it will grind the gears but it would be ruined just after one time.

1st to 4th would be hard to do, Go straight back.

That's called "skip shifting", and it will not tear your tranny up. Just make sure your RPM's are high enough on the gear you are entering, so you aren't lugging the engine.

You should be able to skip every other gear without a problem.

In that standard-shift dumptruck, I have a hard time shifting from first to second because the gears are so close together. Whenever I go from 1st and try to shift straight up into 2nd, I always go into 4th. :x Maybe it's because I'm scared of accidentally putting it into reverse, I always move it to the right a little

I agree with COLT. Every truck I've driven with 5 speed will take off just fine in 2nd. Also I can see it grinding if you hit reverse but I can't see it actually making the shift into reverse before you pull it back to neutral. Can you not feel the gate pressure when you pull it to the left to go to first? If you can just push the lever to neutral and it will go back to center, directly in line with 2nd and 3rd.

By the way, what you are doing is called floating not powershifting. Powershifting is done mainly in performance cars, it means to shift as fast as you can using the clutch while keeping the throttle flat to the floor.

You would really have to force it to get the tranny into reverse while moving forward.

Oh. I had asked someone about it, and he called it powershifting. But he also dragraces cars, so he might have gotten them mixed up.

Physically impossible, I would say...you would have to be GOING BACKWARD to be able to shift into reverse without a clutch....

I'm scared of accidentally putting it into reverse while using the clutch. I'll get it one day tho. :)

arent most 5 speeds syncronised the spicer 5's like in the international 4700 series dump trucks even u power shift them you'll wear out the syncronizers and tear up the tranny those 5 speed dumptrucks are a joke they have no torque what so ever I remember the dt466e truck I drove with a 5 with a full load of sand it was hard to get the truck rolling

Even using the clutch, while going forward, it will not go into reverse. I've seen guys at racetracks when doing the 3-4 shift, tap the reverse lockout...the back up lights come on, but it wil not go into reverse. You have nothing to worry about, and are paranoid.
