I am taking CDL class right now trying to get a job after I get license. I dont know how it feels like doing OTR 10 hrs a day for 5-6 days straight. My friend say the good thing is , it is like I get travel to other places for free. Some say if I am driving 11 hrs a day, I dont have much free time on the road to do things.

One OTR driver say they passby a BestBuy and go in for shopping for a GPS. For those of you doing OTR, do you get enough time to do things like stop and take scenic pictures or go shopping ?

Trucking ain't about shopping and sight seeing. Most of the sights you will see are going to be through a windshield at 60 mph. The shopping you will be doing will be at a truckstop. Never mistake the travel in trucking as a vacation. I'm sure there are many here who will tell u the same. With that being said....there are a few times when you will have opportunities to see a few things on an occasional extended layover. Trucks make money moving down the road not at the local galleria or beachside motel.

Couldn't have said that better myself really. Yeah, I've seen some neat sights - but most of them from 65mph down a highway in the distance. Most places tourists frequent do not allow big trucks near, and you won't have time if you are making money in most cases anyway.

If I have time between loads, and I'm close to a sight thats interesting i'll be a tourist. It's easier for me since i'm a O/O.

depends 0n who you work for you can always get a cab if you have time :lol:

A pretty old thread, however I see your point. I have been working now in Europe for a while and my friends considered that "traveling" haha. Not at all, it's a real and hard job! Right now, I am going on vacation and it will finally be "traveling". It's funny how our perceptions change based on the lens we're viewing through.
