Thumbs down Grad of CDL school 1year ago...now what?

I graduated from a CDL Comm College school and have valid Class A w/tankers & HazMat. I have not worked as a driver since. Companies say they will not hire a CDL school grad after 3months of graduation. Any ideas on what I may do to get hired. I drove tankers for 6months 10years ago.

The community college driving school I went to offers free refresher training to all graduates. Call the one you went to and see if they do the same.

Some of the training carriers such as Swift, Roehl, Millis or CRST might give you an opportunity if you are willing to run with a trainer for a few weeks or months. Other than that you may need to go back for a refresher course.

Yep, give one of the big outfits a call - or several of them. Swift, Werner, Roehl. Also, talk to the school that you went to to get your CDL. Their placement service should be able to help as another driver mentioned. If you want to drive, there's companies out there that'll take you.. but they won't come looking for you.

My 2 cents is this: Whatever you do, DO NOT get talked into signing on for a Lease Purchase program from any company. Get a solid year out on the road before thinking about one of those "deals". If you do start thinking about that route, pull into the the closest truck stop and ask one of the friendly drivers in the fuel isle to slap you one upside the head.

I would definitely say Swift or Werner, they go through so many drivers they are always looking.

Agreed. It'd also be worth asking some of the larger companies if they have any dedicated offerings in your neck of the woods. That could get you home a little better, plus make some more money for ya.

swift is a month and a half. but atleast you still get paid....if you call it getting paid. after your meals on the road, i think you actually owe swift money back. =)

Don't know your whole story, but wonder why you didnt go right from the school into driving. for me, i dont like to waste time. i went right from school, to orientation, to training. the only time i took off from Aug. 13, 2008 wasnt till first week of Nov. 2008. that was going from knowing jack shatner to being 'coded' and upgrade to solo....
