So, then, why bail out the financial industry? Why not just leave them behind? If that's what they're going to do with the rest of us. Or, would that mean that a few would lose their "golden parachutes"?

The US financial arena is a totally different animal and I would hope you would understand the difference.

When you put government in control of business it is sure to fail. These people can't even balance a budget, yet expect to be able to run two of the largest corporations in the world and be competitive? The only way a free capitalist society can continue to function is to allow companies to fail, regardless of size and to keep government control out. I just read something about how those passengers who were on the airplane that crashed into the Hudson have filed claims and are having a difficult time with AIG, the insurance company for the airline.
