Third, JB Hunt payed upwards of .42 cpm 8 YEARS AGO. After freight slowed in the early 2000's, they rolled back pay across the board by a NICKEL A MILE. No, I am not making this up, it is a FACT - something your good friend Sheepdancer will not bother to mention. Do you really want to work for a company like that?

Yes, this is true....sort of. If you are going to post this Cold...at least be accurate. When we reduce starting pay, current drivers DO NOT get a cut in pay. So if a driver came in at 42 and for some reason we reduce the pay of starters to 40. That driver DOES NOT go to 40. And the good news is if we are paying 40 and we raise the starting pay to 42. Every driver in the company gets the raise and they will stay there even if the pay goes back down.
Glad I could clear that up for you COLD.

I don't have a dog in this fight but in the interest of fairness and history we should all take a trip in the way back machine to the year 1997.

In 1997 JB Hunt dropped their student training program and decided to change their business paradigm drastically. They decided it was a more expedient business practice to go after the experienced driver and started offering experienced drivers a starting pay of .37cpm. Now, .37cpm doesn't sound like all that and a bag of chips in 2007, 10 years later, but it sent a huge ripple in the mega-carriers hiring practices back then.

Suddenly, carriers who had been trying to fill their trucks offering only .23cpm were being overwhelmed with drivers who they couldn't retain because the wages they were used to offering were suddenly way, way too low. Not all carriers raised their wages as high as JB's but they were forced to offer some sort of raise and/or other concessions.

That's how I remember it.

Just an opinion.
It really depends on what happens while the employee was hired on. I don't count those who bash on JB without ever working for them. Usually what happens is that for the time a driver is hired on to the time he quits, the driver receives poor, or in my case, very poor miles. And of course, we get a few that complains about being released from JB for the little fender bender that cost the company thousands of dollars, or for that speeding ticket they gotten in their own car (usually going 110 MPH in a 25 MPH zone).

I bash on JB because my family suffered while employed with them. I quit after 3 months, saying "enough is enough". The bottom line is the bottom line, and when your family goes hungry, and their is nothing you can do, you get pissed off. That was over a year ago.

I'm doing much better now with my current local job, and you can check out what I'm making with the tagline below. Sad part about this is that your not going to make the same as I do working OTR with JB unless you have been their forever (which is usually over 1-2 years).

Hope this answers your question.

Thanks Cluggy. I guess I should of wrote the post to you since you were the one that I always noticed bashing them. Now that I know and understand your reasons, I'll say no more...Bash away. I really didn't know if everybody was just ragging them because it was the gang mentality or if everyone had bad experiences with them. Gald to see your doing better now and in a better place.

I want to add my applause as well!!! Never let it be said that Hobo won't give credit where credit is due!

I've been hard on CFM for the very reason mentioned above. For along while ALL his answers sounded like "you're a fool if you drive OTR. Join the Free Americans who have a real job local or in some other business."

I have noticed that MOST of his recent posts (including this one) have been MUCH more "informative" and much less "condescending." To be honest, I never knew that he KNEW so much!

I SHOULD and WILL TRY TO "take to heart" my own advice that, when one is constantly "making noise" of the same caliber, it becomes nothing but "elevator music." Paying dividends ONLY to the one "producing" it.

I have ENJOYED your recent contributions, CFM, and I apologize to some degree for my antagonism.

I have always felt that there is a place for BOTH sides to every discussion as long as they are factual and informative..... and realize we are NOT here just to blow "rosy smoke" up newbies "skirts"...... but neither have I felt that, once they GET here, they should be discouraged by ONE person's negativity about the industry, or any one company.

Again, I tip my hat to you CFM!
