Brain Surgery.........

Hello I was wondering if someone can post a link so I can read if Brain Surgery DQ a driver. They recently found tumors and I had my very first brain surgery in October 2012. The Surgeon says I will be able to get back in the truck in a year or 2. I don't know if he is saying it to keep me in good spirits or if he truly means it. So I am trying to find out on my own where in the DOT Requirements does it state about that specifically.

Thanks in advance!!!

I don't know of a law that states that any sort of brain surgery disqualifies a driver from holding a CDL. As long as your doctor says that you are medically qualified to go back to work and you can pass the DOT physical, I don't see that it would be a problem working. You may contact a clinic or physician that does DOT physicals and ask them to be certain.

GMAN, THANK YOU for the advice!! I greatly appreciate it. May you have a blessed holiday and a great 2013.

Specialist/Surgeon is hopeful that I will get back in the truck in a year or 2 but not sure if he is saying it to keep me in positive spirits or if he truly means it.

Be safe!!!

You are welcome, NakdApple. I wish you well in during the holidays and coming year. As long as you can get medically cleared while you have at least 6 months experience in the last 3 years, you should not have a problem finding another driving position. Even if goes over the 3 year mark, you might find a smaller carrier that will hire you. In fact, you could probably find a major carrier that would put you with a trainer for a couple of weeks to get you rolling again. One thing, however. If at all possible, it would be good if you could not allow your CDL to expire before you once again become medically certified. Carriers don't like to see a suspended driver's license.
