My husband is on the way going to his orientation
 

Hello friends,

Today my husband is on the way going to TransAm for his orientation. This is the frist time we are apart...I cried a lot when I left him at the bus station... but we will meet for the next two months. I feel miss him so much already.

We have a young 9 month old son...he just knew how to crawl before my husband left us 1 day....my baby learns how to talk too...

I just have a short message to share with all of you...I hope when I need advice, all of you will give me.

9-month old son and he couldn't get a local gig or a job that would keep him home? I'll just never understand that, myself. :cry: It's one thing to be in the business and a family suddenly gets started while you're in it. It's quite another to enter the business AFTER you've started a family.

I'm certain there are probably extenuating circumstances as to what caused him to get involved in the business. But on the flip side, I'm certain there are other things that could be done to keep him closer to home.

You'll get a lot of support here, but a lot of questions as to why he is going OTR with a new family.

My husband was a computer specialist for 12 years. He was very tired of it and has wanted to change his career. Plus we need to make more money to pay debt, therefore, he is willing to work OTR to get experience for a while and then will think about looking for a Truck local job.

I am a mom and a medical student so my husband has to work hard to support us.

I imagine he was making a lot more as a computer specialist than he will as an OTR driver just getting into the business. I wish you guys the best, I really do. I just questioned the career path at this stage. It's a tough job and many times, a thankless job. Sure, the money is there eventually and there are some drivers out there making some great money, have great hometime, and have found their niche in the business. But finding that spot and making good money generally takes a few years or more, unless you fall into a great local gig. Until then, the money isn't great, especially that first year, the hometime is very, very sporadic, and it's tough on the driver and on his family. You'll need a good support network and a way to keep your 9-month old in the loop with his father. Not saying he's going to fail, not at all...just saying that it'll be a tough road on several fronts for that first year or so.

I have to agree with Twilight. I left the IT industry after a divorce and started a driving career footloose and fancy free so to speak and it was still a lot to adjust to. OTR driving isn't just a job or career, it's a lifestyle. A lifestyle that can be wonderful, but you also miss out on what most call a 'normal' lifestyle. My daughter just graduated high school and turned 18 this year and it's still hard. I sure wouldn't recommend anyone start an OTR driving career with a nine month old at home. :shock: That said, my prayers and well wishes are with you that everything works out for the best for your family. :)

Wow, it is especially tough for a family separation this time of the year. I hope his first year goes by quickly and his options increase. I am still in "IT", and I know what it is like to be a prisoner to the trade, but OTR in your situation is a pretty drastic step. Local driving jobs are tough to find with no experience (even part-time)-- been there already.

My husband did not make a lot of money as everybody thinks will do for a computer specialist..his boss did not give him a raise therefore he quit and try to find a different job. Of course I am his wife so I have supported my spouse to do what he wants to... We have a good marriage and take good care of each other... I know this will be a tough time for us and my son..but we will keep in touch to make the long distance become close.

It is not easy to find a trucking job in local while requiring experience... so OT is the current choice for my husband right now. I just wish the best for him to pass the test and get a good training period, then will be on the road with own truck. Nothing is easy in front...for us. However, we still have help from his family so I feel not lonely... plus, I have you guys always give me advice.

3 days more I will have Christmas vacation from school...I will have more time to spend with my little one.

Being away from home sucks...especially with little ones about.
And studying medicine is no easy chore with a "crawler"...(just WAIT until he is a toddler!!!).....

I "came in" just last month to have time with my 18 month old (and her 5 and 7 yo sisters) 'cause my wife couldn't handle them all in her "delicate" state (due end of March)...

btw....just had ultrasound today...and this one will be XY !!!!!!!!
