Crossdocking:
Please describe everything you know about crossdocking.

It's a term I just heard recently by ONE of the many co-drivers I've had. Basically, it sounds like Linehaul driving as I do now for FedEx. I (or we) take the trailers to a terminal where they are then forwarded to other terminals farther away. I guess it is the opposite of picking up a load (receiving,) and then delivering it to the customer, and then going to pick up another load.
That's pretty much all I know. I just know that some people call this "linehaul" that I do crossdocking. |
Cross docking is when they take a load off of one truck, bring it " a cross " the dock to another truck. Basicly it doesn't get stored anywhere.

Cross Docking, from what I understand. Basically, a company has trailers on one side of the dock, or at set doors, that are empty or in various stages of being loaded. Each door is set for a certain destination. You have other doors with full trailers. They unload those full trailers and place the freight into one of the empty trailers going to its destination. Once they are filled someone runs then to that destination. This, as I understand, primarily is used in LTL freight. Although I may be a bit off in who uses it.

I do a cross dock run every night. More or less it's what others have said, in my case I pick up a preloaded trl at company "A" and take it to a remote location that's also owned by "A". I unload and the product is then picked up by 5 local drivers and goes out to be delivered to the end users.
