Road/Driver Courtesies
 

I know a few of the common courtesies for fellow drivers, but would some of you more experienced Drivers inform the rest of the board and newbies of what these are......and also give me a better understanding if in case there are some I dont know...... I understand that unless someone has paid close attn in their 4wheelers before changing industries dont generally know these courtesies and the schools and (company) Trainers are more concentrated on skills/stamina for rookie drivers than explaining the courtesies.....

I feel that the more word is out there about them the safer (altho maybe just minimally) it'll be for everyone.....and I'll take one less ticked off/alive driver from it is totally worth the effort......thank you

I would say 90% of the time I use lights low beam. The other 10% radio. Reason being not all people run a cb or use channel 19.

personally I use both.....

We don't even have one in the truck. And I'll add that, at night, I don't care if it's flashing high beams or flashing lights off - the point is they made the effort to let me know I'm clear.

That was my point Lady18wheels. Try and talk to a yellow or roadway driver or any LTL driver. And you might as well be talking to yourself. They run big fancy radios and are mostly up on higher channels that a typical cb will not reach. I run one but most of the time the volume is so low I cant hear it Dont want to anyway. So I prefer the light flashing.

well anyways, I was just originally trying to get the 'courtesies' posted up here from all our experienced driver friends so that even the newbies know what they were......

Yea we do sort of get carried away around here huh. :P Well in my opinion along with the passing thing which we have discussed to death now. I would say just letting drivers behind you know of any road hazards up ahead that you know of and they cant see. IE your on a 2 lane road with another truck behind you and see you see farmer brown up ahead on his tractor going down the road. Or even construction hazards others might not be aware of. A car on the side of the road, someone riding a bicycle on the shoulder,a pedestrian.

Since we don't have a cb I turn on my flashers to warn people behind me that there's something going on up ahead. Sometimes this is the only way I know something's wrong.

I just quickly turn my lights off then on for one very good reason flashing hi beams can be very hazardous. where is a driver looking when he is wanting to come over? in the mirror flashing hi beams may cause the person to lose there night vision momentarly and cause a accedent. how do I know this a state trooper gave me a ticket for it. and gave a long talking to about it ect. ect. point being off and then on. is what he told me and 120 bucks in tuition later I was a more educated trucker.

I'm not a driver yet. But maybe ya'll can give me some pointers for sharing the road with The big Rigs.

I already flash my lights to let them know they are clear. I always leave turning room at an intersection, and if you need more, I'll move. I always drive 1 1/2-2 car lengths behind, and try to stay to my right so my lights can be seen in the mirror (without blinding the driver). If I'm in the lead, I try my best to stay out of the way!!

When coming around a Rig, I almost always get nervous. I'm not sure where (what point) you lose sight of my vehicle. I've thought about beepin the horn, but I hate it when it's done to me.

I'm also teaching my daughter and her friends about sharing the roads with ya'll. As we live in a city where you are on the freeway frequently.
They want to know, when coming on, if you (the Rig) can't get over, should they speed up or slow down?? Another words what are you more comfortable with???

Any pointers would be appreciated.
