Scherr Mountain in WV, Route 42 & 93 (video)

Shot video of my drive down the mountain today. At the top, you can see where they're working on the new US-48 highway. It's under construction between just north of Maysville, WV and Thomas, WV. They're saying 2-3 years for that section to open up.

The mountain itself is 4 miles @ 10%. I'm in a conventional sleeper truck with a 53' trailer and 45,000lbs of charcoal for a load. My top speed on the grade was 25mph, with the engine brake doing 90% of the work, plus it stayed in 6th gear all the way down.

The 4 mile drive took just over 11 minutes top to bottom.

Came up that road out of Petersburg. Nice drive in the fall.

Very cool video, Mal, thanks for sharing. Has that camera caught any exciting/dramatic happenings?

I only had the iPad set up to record that section of drive because I knew how interesting and fun it is.

But, I can't wait until the new US-48 section is completed so I don't have to drive that mountain any more.

It's a cool video Mal. Post some more of the mountain roads of WV when you can.

That.......was an awesome ride! The one criticism I have.......you gotta get rid of that bottle/jar/jug ring on your dash, I was screaming the last half of the way down! My OCD kickin in;)LMAO! Thanks for the ride MAL!

LOL - that soda bottle cap-ring is jammed into my lighter outlet splitter so the charger doesn't fall out.

Brings back memories of my days on the road.... One bit of technology hasn't changed much, I see.... Still get bugs splattered on the windshield......

Malaki86 08-25-2012 12:45 PM

The sad part is that I literally scrubbed the windshield clear less than 20 minutes before I started recording.
