Local Work
I'm just about done dealing with the OTR work - you know, gone for weeks on end, not seeing your home, friends & family, all that good stuff. I quit Celadon last week with the original plan of going to a regional carrier (home every weekend).
After I got home, though, I started talking to people about the gas-well driving jobs, mainly driving the water trucks. I started checking into it and wow - I had no idea they were paying that good, or looking for drivers in this area the way they are. I applied to a few places yesterday (small companies), but kept looking around on the internet for postings. This morning, I checked the local newspaper and saw an ad for Waste Management. They're running waste water, vacuum trucks and roll-offs for the drilling around here. Starting pay is $16/hr (fantastic for this area), working 60+ hours per week, plus a $1,250 sign-on bonus. I ran those numbers and found that I could make MORE money by working local and sleeping in my own bed every night. So, now the process of waiting for places to call me for an interview. I just hope they don't wait too long because I had to finance a car the other day and the bills are gonna be coming due. I have the regional job waiting for me, but I don't want to string them along for too long. |

Still waiting to hear back from them - they said 10-14 days.
Gotta keep the options open. |
Well.......Good luck young man! If you are going to look at oilfield look at Key Energy, Nabors Energy, Chesapeake as well......and yes they run trucks!

Checked all three - closest location to me is roughly 1.5hrs drive - a bit too far at todays cost for gas prices in a 4wd blazer.
Thanks for the info though. |
Nice - just got a call about one of the applications I put in this morning. I'm meeting them for an interview this evening, and will have my drug test either this evening if the clinic is still open or tomorrow morning. They're working LONG hours. He said I'll use up every DOT hour available. Starting pay is $17/hr, with everything over 40 as overtime. Said the drivers are averaging $85,000 per year with no end in sight for the local work.

You can almost always make more money being home every night than you can running the road. :smokin:

What did you come up with? Something somewhat local or one last over the road gig? |
i have been doing a little of both. Almost all local, except the past 2 weeks i was out in Youngstown, then i went down to Atlanta last weekend. I spent a few month running back and forth to Nova Scotia. 1 day i'll have a reefer, next day i'll pull a flat-bed. Right now i'm trying to convince the boss to find me a load going to Arizona or New Mexico area. I have never been out there, but i would like to pull atleast one load out that way.

Had the interview this evening - went great. I'll be doing my drug test & driving test either tomorrow or Friday. He said I should be working by the 1st of the week. Will be driving a tri-axle water truck. They're also looking into getting loads that require hazmat. Once that happens, the pay will increase.
As for making more money being home daily, definitely can working for that wage and those hours. In fact, it works out to pretty much DOUBLE what I made at Celadon last year. |
