White's T/S - Raphine, VA
This evening was the first time I've stayed at Whites since the ownership changeover. This place USED to have an incredible restaurant. Definitely not the case any more.
They have the seafood buffet on Friday, if you want to call fish, breaded shrimp and breaded clams seafood. None of that looked appetizing, so went to the menu. My wife and I both got the country fried steak with mashed potatoes and cottage cheese. Forty-five minutes after we ordered it, the food finally comes to the table. I wish it didn't. The country fried steak is nowhere near what I would call any type of meat. It's a 1/4" thick slab of processed crap with ultra-thin coating. I can buy better frozen country fried steak in a TV dinner at Wal-Mart. Not only that, but the deep fryers are all used to deep fry the "seafood" - and the oil is burnt. Nothing like eating a fake country fried steak that tastes like burnt fish. We complained to the waitress who "nicely" didn't charge us for one of the steaks ($7.79 for each meal). Instead, she charged $2.39 for one cottage cheese and $2.39 for one mashed potatoes. I ate my entire meal simply because we've ate nothing but fast food for the past 4 days. My wife had maybe 3 bites of her steak. When we were paying the bill, I again complained to the cashier. Let's just say that I would've gotten further by talking to myself in the bathroom mirror. Anyway, I'm done with this truckstop. Lee Hi still does a great job. I can also go to Dixie's Diner at the t/s in Elliston. |
Forgot to mention the guy that sat at the booth across from us:
He ordered the buffet and made one trip to it. When he sat down, he took one bite of everything he had, got up, told the waitress how "wonderful" the food was and walked out. |
I thought the food was good when i went there. That was after the Lee-Hi owner bought it.
|
Maybe it was just because I ordered food that was deep-fried in the same burnt oil as the fish & such.

I prefer Lee Hi, but I have eaten at White's a couple of times since the changeover. As I recall, the food was pretty good.

Anytime I was at White's, I had no complaints about the food. But, I didn't stop there very often because I always had a problem finding a place to park. Lee Hi was one of the places where I could always find some kind of place to park, and I never had a complaint about the food there either.
There was one trip when I was really glad about the way Lee Hi is laid out. With funnel clouds dancing around, I parked at the lowest level I could find. None of them touched down in the area, but you don't have any way of knowing that before hand. I'm not sure just how it would be if one touched down at White's. |
I've never had any problem with the food at White's, but have only eaten one thing (mozzarella sticks from the deli) from there since the ownership change.
Truth be told, I think Lee-Hi's seafood buffet is slipping a little, too, but that's another story. |
I have ate there once since the change. AND WILL NOT go back. The food is nothing but bad. I ordered pork-chops and got two little thin greasy things they called a pork-chop. On the other hand Le-Hi has good food.
