Let the Honeymoon begin!
Flying J, Pilot complete merger of their travel centers | The Salt Lake Tribune
"An announcement about what Flying J, once one of the biggest private companies in the United States, will become is expected soon, Maggelet said." Vapor? This is indeed a banner day for we Drivers. Pilot picks up FJ for a song, the new, leaner Flying Pilot Co. will result in tremendous reductions in overhead and operating expenses, their enormously expanded buying power will force their suppliers to lower prices and all the savings will be passed on to us! Or maybe not. Probably not. I'll be happy if they just put Pilot coffee in the FJs. Come to think of it, I still haven't been to a Denny's converted FJ. Anyone? Today, I was at one of my very favorite Pilots . . Nitro, WV (fuel assignment, not by choice) and, as usual, the line waiting to get in was blocking the line waiting to get out. It's a brilliant design. Another "come to think of it", under the Patriot Act, interfering with an interstate shipment can now be prosecuted as an act of terrorism with no bail and no habeas corpus, just like the goons in Gitmo. I think a case could be made to arrest the entire Nitro staff. |
I used to pass by that exit to that Pilot every day. I thought about giving it a try, but even from the interstate it didn't look too inviting.... especially with my doubles! :hellno:
I'm with you about the coffee. And I wouldn't mind seeing the Kiosk in the J's (for the few times I fuel there.) EVERY T/S should have a Kiosk for getting your fuel receipt! |

Oh, that would be SWEET... |
I had to stop yesterday at the Pilot in Nitro. Gawd, what a freaking mess. I should've stopped in KY at one of the Pilot's for fuel instead. Can't wait till they build the new one in Jane Lew on I-79. Ok - I didn't think I'd ever say I can't wait for a new Pilot - LOL.

I was there at 16-1615 . . were we like two ships, passing in the night? |
The new Denny's at the hook in Waco opens next week. I think they had to wait that long for the exterminators to get rid of all the rats and roaches in the old restaurant. Not a huge Denny's fan, but it is only about 3 miles from the house so I will at least try it.

I was there around 13:00-14:00 (or, actually, took that long to get fuel).
I stopped at the J in Carlisle, PA with the Denny's - Damn good food, and the same price as a 'standalone' Denny's. Hope Pilot doesn't screw up the J - if I can fuel at the J's soon, I'll be more than happy. |
Love's is buying out some Flyin J's in CA, OR and WA. I stopped at the J in Corning and saw all the signs covered over and Loves on the pumps. The manager said they're taking over the Tacoma and Troutdale J's too. Hope they improve the parking situation in the Tacoma store. I pulled in there once and had to knock on doors just to get back out of there.

So that's why the flyin hook takes Comdata now. The J here has big signs that say they are 'Now accepting Comdata'. I was wondering..

According to an article I read a few days ago, the new company will be known as Pilot Flying J. I have been in a couple of the restaurants that have been converted to Denny's. The food is pretty good. There is a Pilot in Georgia on I-20 that has a Denny's. They had a special on their grand slam breakfast until 11:00 am. I believe it was $2.99? In any case, it was a welcome change from Subway or McDonald's. Actually, I would not have stopped had it not been a regular restaurant.
The article that I read also mentioned that the company plans to renovate the driver's lounges in the Flying J's. Hopefully, they will keep the lounges. Otherwise, I may as well start spending my money at TA if I plan on spending some time at the stop. |
