This happened here in Wichita Falls. Kemp Boulevard is a 4-lane that runs north and south. Pretty much from one end of town to the other. There's no telling how fast the girl was driving. Probably close to triple digits.

One man was pronounced dead and his sister was hospitalized Thursday morning after a one-vehicle accident that closed several blocks of Kemp Boulevard, police said.

Pieces of a 2007 blue Honda Accord, which was ripped in half by the impact, were scattered across several blocks as the Wichita Falls Police Department investigated the accident.

The back end of the car was hardly recognizable, aside from a license plate and a back seat.

“Speed was obviously a factor,” said Sgt. Joe Snyder, public information officer with the WFPD.

The rear end of the car still rested by the two trees it hit in the 2200 block of Kemp, near Avenue M, just before 3 a.m. The front of the vehicle sat in the middle of the road on the opposite end of the 2100 block of Kemp, near Avenue K.

Benton William Crow II, 20, was pronounced dead at the scene. He was ejected from the car when it struck two trees and a light pole in the median.

The driver of the vehicle, Elizabeth Monnique Duerson, 26, was taken to surgery Thursday morning. She may face charges related to Crow’s death, Snyder said.

She was in fair condition in the Intensive Care Unit at United Regional Thursday afternoon.

Police confirmed Crow and Duerson were brother and sister.

Emergency responders went to the scene at 2:51 a.m. and found Crow’s body near the back of the car and Duerson trapped in the front of the car a block away.

She was freed by crews and taken to the hospital.

Snyder said early investigations showed the car was northbound on Kemp when it hit the right curb at Avenue M. The vehicle crossed the northbound lanes before hitting a tree, a light pole and another tree. That caused the car to break in half and the passenger to be ejected.

The front of the car continued, crossing the southbound lanes, hitting another curb and bouncing back into the northbound lanes before resting just before Avenue K.

North and southbound lanes of Kemp were closed between avenues M and K from the time of the accident until about 10:45 a.m. while police investigated and crews cleaned up the pieces.

No one witnessed the crash, but residents heard the initial impact, describing it as a boom. One resident about a block away called police reporting gunshots. They may have heard the bang of the car hitting the trees and pole and thought it was gunshots, Snyder said.

Police did not release an estimated speed but said for the car to split and the front to continue forward for 1½ blocks scraping the ground, it had to have been immense.
