I would like your opinions on what brand and model engine you think starts the best in cold weather.

I would also like to know what engine you would think works best for on the farm usage maybe get 5,000 miles a year.

If you could what wheelbase would you go with? Day cab, sleeper don't matter.

Thanks in advance, been look at auctions online, and I think I may get one in dad's price range.

Drove a Pete with a 3406 Cat that had a "hot-line". Leaving the hot-line on with the engine shut off will drain the battery in a short time, but I did have one cold day when turning that switch on sure did keep the engine running. A good block heater would be a must in ND, as well as a couple of cans of starting fluid on hand.

While I have enjoyed some of the older Cat engines, they are getting out of the Class-8 business. Cummins seems to be a bit cheaper to maintain, and I did have very good service from the N-14+ I owned. I'd have far more faith in Cummins than Detroit, I've also driven Mercedes, and would not even consider that.

For farm use, I would stay away from anything that would be close to 13'6". Don't know where all you plan to use it, but considering power lines, and tree branches, I'd be looking at a flat-top. 255" wheel-base, or longer, and twin-screw.

Dumb question but what does twin screw mean?

Both tandems are powered. Power Divider instead of one dead axle.
