Channel 9

I have a dumb question.
Don't know why, but the thought came to mind last night.
Does anyone monitor Channel 9 on the CB radio anymore? I've heard of folks using Channel 9 when I was a kid, but I wonder if the channel would still provide help, if needed. Do any of the local law enforcement offices in the towns, cities, etc keep a CB radio on Channel 9?
Now days, everyone and their dog has a cell phone, but I was just curious if Channel 9 was still in use, if you ever needed it.

my 4 wheeler broke down about a year ago on il-255 about 9:30 at night, it was just my 5 year old son and myself. We started walking, (cellphone was dead) and didn't get too far when an illinois state trooper stopped and picked us up. He gave us a ride into the nearest town, and while riding in it, I noticed he had a uniden pro 510 on channel 9. don't know if the vol was up or not, but it was in there and turned on.

I be darn.
Well..I didn't know. I was just curious.
Every once in a while, there will be a cow out in the grass by the highway. Whenever I see one, I'll call 911, and tell the locals. I'll tell them about where the cow is, etc. Sounds silly, but someone coming by about half asleep could have a bad accident. :hellno:
I've thought about turning down to Channel 9, whenever I see cattle out by the road, but I don't know if it would do any good. Who knows, those sheriff's offices may have a radio that is on Channel 9.

Used to use it up here in VA, not sure if the Staties still use it anymore though. I know they used to monitor it till the mid 90's. I'm sure they do monitor it in the cars, just have the volume down a bit.

unless your close or have lots of fire in the wire, its prolly useless

I doubt too many police officers use it anymore. I don't see many with CB's in their cars. Even then, it's the occasional VA state trooper or rural sheriff's deputy. Heck, even the DOT cops rarely have one. The last DOT officer I talked to (in eastern NC, who was giving me a Level 3 inspection at the time) had one, but didn't bother having it installed. REACT supposedly monitors it, but I don't put much stock in them.

Times have changed. These days only reason I even have a CB is because sometimes thats the only way i can check inn for a pick up. Since i go to alot of these mines and whatnot, when you get there there is no one to talk to and the places are size of a small cities.

It would be interesting to see if anyone does actually listen on channel 9. I have noticed a cop now and then who has a CB in his car, but I doubt most do.

It darn sure doesn't help to put information out on channel 19, with all the drivers cruising down the road, leaning against their door, talking into their cell phone, while the CB is turned off.

I think channel 9 is better monitored out in the sticks than it is in larger cities.

You're probably right, Orange.
It wouldn't surprise me if some of the small towns did have a CB radio on 9-or 19 in their office.
