GPS disappointment...

I've had a TomTom One and a Garmin 255W...and they're great devices...each with things I wish the other had. Bought both as each represent one of the two mapping systems technologies available. Anywho...I'm an electronic "gadget" collector from many years back and wifey, after 38 years of marriage..knows and accepts that...anywho, with that background, I'll get to the "disappointment."

Wife and I just had our 38th wedding anniversary and for a gift she got me the big 7", $599 specifically for truckers, WorldNav GPS. Bless her heart.

I used it for a couple weeks alongside my Garmin...what a disappointment...doesn't tell ya to turn until you're right on top of the turn...doesn't show graphics of exits until right on top of it..in most cases past the ramp...anywho...it's got a lot of great bells and whistles on top of being a GPS...but, as a GPS it has a looooonnnnggg way to go. Also, really didn't like having a big 7" screen...too big to mount up in the windshield area...

Well...Garmin's supposed to be coming out with a new one for truckers very soon...may already be out...gave back the WorldNav unit to the truckstop wife bought it at...but, they don't give cash back...just replace, so when they get the new Garmin for trucking they're gonna give me one in trade. And it's only 4.3"

The new Garmin Nuvi 465T can be seen here.

In trying to find out when it may be out I called the local Target as suggested by Garmin...they don't have it. Called Best Buy, the biggest Garmin retailer in our area...they have it in their computers...projected availability date, 16 June, can take pre-orders now.

I was going to try it, but the reviews said it was a piece of crap, before you buy the Garmin, google the reviews

There's been plenty of reviews on the Worldnav unit and how much of a pos it is.

I had read about it..but, to be quite honest, most feedback on things is negative on the net, it's the mad guys that take the time to complain:p I own a lot of things that I like a great deal that have "bad" reviews and comments on the net. Besides, as stated, the wife bought it for me and I hoped it would be better than what I'd read....and sure ain't gonna tell her after she spent that much money that it's a POS...I'd like to see the 39th anniversary with her:) Her thoughts were good and much appreciated by me....and from me all she'll hear is a big thanks...and....it works great.

A lot of people don't know this, but TeleNav uses truck mapping and I think it's an excellent system. I've been using it for almost 2 years on my PDA (HTC Mogul) from Sprint. It tells you when your exit is coming up 1.5 miles in advance. I really like it.

Garmin is coming up with a truck specific one.I believe you can only buy the map, even from their site and then install it via computer to your existing one.Check into that one.I just bought a garmin 265 from costco with $150 after losing my $500 tom tom one.

A very good site for reviews that i used on all my electronics is cnet.com. Their reviews are very strict and they very rarely rate a product with a high score.

But why did your wife buy a gps from a truckstop in the first place?Their prices are outrageously high on anything, espcially electronics. The internet, best buy, and other bigger retailers can offer some competitive pricing unlike a truckstop.
