Interesting phone call this am...

Sprint called me this morning. I guess they've changed their "unlimited" data plan yet again. It's now a 5Gig limit, but only 300meg if you're roaming, such as using a Verizon tower.

Verizon is still on the true 5gig plan.

Quote:

With this plan and your Mobile Broadband Card or USB modem, you have instant Internet access wherever you go on the Sprint Mobile Broadband network.
This plan includes

  • 5 GB/mo. in total or 300 MB/mo. while off-network roaming. (1024 kb=1MB. 1024 MB=1 GB)
  • Additional monthly usage over 5 GB costs 5¢/MB. You may not use more than 300 MB/mo. while off-network roaming.
  • International data roaming may incur additional charges. Sprint reserves the right to limit throughput speeds or amount of data transferred.

Gawd what idiots. I called Sprint back. They told me that no one called me a few minutes ago. I asked them why the hell I would be calling and raising holy hell with them about it if they hadn't called.

I think it may have had something to do with me telling them that I'd be speaking to a lawyer about a lawsuit for breach of contract (them changing the plan after I'd signed a contract). I also said that maybe others should get in on a class-action lawsuit against Sprint over it.

Bah - what a way to start the day.

Yeah, I just got a Verizon card, 5 GB limit while my father in law has a Verizon card that is truly unlimited. He got in during a promotion time where he signed a contract that they can't renege on right now for the same price I have my 5 GB limit. Cheaper than the 8-10 GB service's that a local broadband company is offering starting at $150 and going up along with having to pay large startup fees. Sucks that I can't get regular high speed thru a LAN because I'm in the middle of nowhere. Verizon Residential said it might be 10 years or more for that.

As far as Sprint limiting roaming to 300 Mb, this has been in place for quite a while already. I'm finding news articles from May that state this.

In further news, AT&T has eliminated their "unlimited" cell phone data plan, in an attempt to stop people from tapping their phones into their laptops to gain cheap internet access. I'm sure other providers are already following suit.

Rev. that's because all these companies are now realizing the consumer is not so dumb and is taking big advantage of their foolishness. The problem is like what Mal has, a current contract that if they break it, he can do whatever and they have to eat it.

I just spoke to Sprint again. They basically admitted that what they are doing is a breach of contract. So, looks like I'll be switching to Verizon today.

They pulled up my data usage for last month. I used a total of 1.5Gb over the month. The problem is that 1.25Gb of that usage was off-network. Mind you, I run the north-east. So, their towers are too far between to be of any good to me.

What sucks is that I've been with Sprint now for over 5 years. I have 3 phones, plus the data card and pay them almost $175/month for all of it. I guess they don't need my money any more.

Did they say that you would defintely be charged or would you be "grandfathered" in?

Malaki86 12-08-2008 05:06 AM

With the 300meg limit, there's no extra charge if you use that much bandwidth - the service flat out stops. You won't even be able to connect to an off-network tower after that limit.

The woman I spoke to this morning said that EVERYONE is now on that plan. There is no grandfathering in with it. In fact, her plan was changed as well and she's going to cancel her Sprint service and go to Verizon. Remember - she's a Sprint employee.

I was looking at switching to Alltell Wireless. After you started this thread though, you got me wondering...so I checked them out again...hadn't looked at them since last April. Alltell is finishing up their merger with Verizon...that is going to fill in a large chunk of Verizon's "Hole" in coverage. Lot's of areas right now, where Verizon service on the aircard is slower than dial-up.

Now looking at AT&T.

i haven't received a call from sprint......yet. i've signed up for their unlimited bandwidth service abotu 2 years ago, and have been with sprint for an overall period of 6 years. if they've in fact have changed my service over to limited, i'm not gonna be too happy about it. i'm NOT going to sign a contract that limits my usage on a monthyl basis. i want unlimited and that's what i should get, right?

back in may, sprint was sending out kill packets to my laptop, to curb the massive bandwidth usage. i called them out on it and they haven't done shit since then.
