dhl is shutting down first of the year..9400 jobs. i heard conway is shutting down 4-6 terminals. i usually do not worry about things but i am worried. to anyone looking at changing jobs, stay where you are at till they send you packing...things suck out there.

As you all know i have been looking for a new job. I cant find anything local. I read the newspaper everyday and for the 1st time in years there is only 1 driving job. On top of that the 1 and only driving job is for a taxi. Things are ruff around the Philly area. Going to work for PE Kramme hauling food grade is looking better and better at 1100-1300$$ a week. Sure beats my 35-40hrs a week i have been getting. But I'm still holding out just hoping something comes up.

Wilmington, Ohio is going to be a ghost town when DHL shuts down that hub. Roadway/Yellow was consolidating several terminals when I left Roadway. I still talk to one of the guys I got hired in with and he is still with Roadway and he has been layed off all sumer and they don't have a clue when they will bring him back?

I'm not driving truck anymore, so I'm not really in touch with things but would have to think hauling fuel or food would be the best bet for steady work.

Conway Freight (LTL) actually closed 40 terminals across the country but it was more due to streamlining than it was the economy. They had too much overlap. The plan had been in the works for a year and less than 200 people lost their job. Most were transferred to neighboring terminals to cover the extra work and territories. But you're right about staying put, its very slow on the job market right now.

I just got my run cancelled permanently this week. I've been averaging 50-55 hrs. per week all year and will be lucky to get 40 this week. Everyone is trimming the fat especially this time of year when things get slow.

that is what really bothers me. this is our slamming busy time, and it is busy...but nothing like years past.

Is DHL the company that has the yellow vans, that compete with UPS, etc?

So, they are gonna belly-up?

I know someone who just got let go of the DHL non-driving job. Tough break. I don't think I would look in the paper for a driving job. On-line is the easiest way to find a job or if you get a referral. If I knew I was losing my job, I'd try to contact people who are driving in my area via C.B. That is one truckers way of networking. I have heard that food is a tough gig. I've done it OTR and it sucks, but if you are paid hourly, I don't think it would be that bad. Everyone needs gas, so you would think that would be steady, but don't count on weekends off and count on being busy in the summer. I tried to get a gas job, but they hired those with experience first. I'd go for that before food hauling just because most of those places are easy in and easy out and only a 48' trailer, while food stuff....have you seen some of the dumps that handle foodstuffs? Wait here, wait there, unhook from trailer, wait in line, unload your stuff, stack it this high, throw dirty pallets, wait for the fork driver, wait for the checker. What a hag it was to work with food. Yep, I'd go with the tank driver job if I had the choice.

Yes, they have the Yellow and Red vans. DHL isn't going under, they are just subing out the air freight to UPS. I think they planned on expanding market share in the US and it just never happened.
