OOIDA: Doing their part to keep rates down.
|
I read that the other day. I don't want the government to get more involved in my business than they are. While lower interest rate loans might be good, we don't need a subsidy from the government. That is the problem with a number of industries. Government has no business getting involved in private enterprise. The single thing that would help us more than anything would be for rates to come up. And that isn't something that is the responsibility of government, either. Carriers and owner operators control rates, or should. All lower interest rate loans are likely to do is encourage those who should not buy a truck to do so. That could actually put more capacity into the market which would drive rates down further. If you have fairly decent credit you can get a lower interest rate loan. You don't need government subsidies. One reason we have gotten into this banking and investment banking collapse is due to government subsidies and interference. The government forced lenders to make home loans to those who could not afford them. Of course, greed was another thing. The result is that we will likely have a huge albatros around our nations neck for many years to come due to poor decision making. We should not have a government safety net for any business, including trucking.

I have to agree with you GMAN. All that the loan would do is help them to be able to accept loads that they loose money on for a while longer forcing even more out of business...... and the cycle would then continue until all are out of business and the taxpayer would be stuck for the bill on all the defaulted loans.
If they don't know how to make a profit now, giving them money won't make them any smarter, it will only prolong their death. A company I worked for and ran for 11 years had this attached to all of our quotes and letter-head: " The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of cheap price is forgotten". It is VERY rare that any company that is a " low cost at any cost " type of company will be around very long. Just my $.02, Ridge |
For a number of guys I know, it would take more than a low interest loan to get them back into their own trucks. Something more like a GRANT. One guy I know has had his truck parked for more than a year, and says that lately, he's thinking of measuring the fifth wheel for a washtub to plant flowers in. Even though his truck is paid off, it will take more than a low interest loan to put his truck back on the road.
