Where is Double L?

He's been missig for almost a month, and I'm curious how he's coming along with the CDL enture.

TK THE TRUCKER 07-07-2008 07:54 AM

Hmmm that's a good question. He was a friend on MySpace but it looks like he deleted his profile recently. I wish they would show who it was that deleted their profile. It just shows up deleted and sometimes it's hard to figure out who it was if you don't remember everyone on your friends list. Guess he's AWAL then. 8) 8)

BigDiesel 07-07-2008 08:57 AM

Maybe he got smart and actually decided to be a 17 y/o kid for the summer rather than a know-it-all wannabe BBR on the WWW.

Coooooffgph

mommee 07-09-2008 06:35 AM

I find Double L tends to disappear for a couple of months, then he comes back. Then he disappears again. Isn't he supppose to be 18 this month?

ironeagle_2006 07-09-2008 09:50 AM

I have him on my Yahoo friends list for messenger and he is always online there.

That's not true. You have no friends.

Thank God, someone finally said it.

Double L 07-10-2008 07:48 AM

I'm here and yup I turn 18 on Monday and as far as the CDL is concerned I'm gonna get the permit hopefully Tuesday. I talked to Mid-West and I got an application and they told me that co-op maybe a possibility and that I got to get the acutal CDL cause they won't accept the permit and they won't provide a truck for the road test, insurance reasons more than likely. So now I got to find a truck and get the CDL before they stop hiring and that is where I stand as of right now.

Give Star Truck Rental a call. They will rent you a day cab hooked to a 53' Van, cover the insurance, and set you up with the state examiner for like $250.

Double L 07-10-2008 08:46 AM

Never heard of them. Thanks Roadhog. I do know a couple people who drive trucks but they are not owner operators. So I doubt their company would allow them to let me take the road test in their trucks. I'll figure something out though.

Roadhog 07-10-2008 09:06 AM

I thought Illinois had them, but after looking at the home page...I guess not.
http://www.starlease.com/rentals.asp

Look in your area for a similar Truck Rental.
I'm not sure if Ryder or Uhaul do this...unless you get insured through another company.

Double L 07-10-2008 09:13 AM

Someone else mentioned uhaul but I think those are class b not class a. Plus you don't need a cdl to drive a uhaul truck and uhauls don't have air brakes. I'll get something figured out before too long!

Double R 07-10-2008 09:23 AM

U-Haul is neither Class A nor Class B. They are Class C. That is way anyone can rent(and wreck) a U-Haul truck  .

Double L 07-10-2008 09:27 AM

Yeah your right, I just realized that!

BigDiesel 07-10-2008 09:32 AM

If it were me... I would go to PTDI certified truck driving school, or a community college that offers truck driver training. Because no insurance company or rental company will offer a truck for rental or the insurace to cover it to a 18y/o.

Double L 07-10-2008 09:41 AM

I was going to go to a training school up the road from me but they closed down cause the owner retired and the nearest school that takes 18 year olds is in Cuba, Missouri.

No offense at all Double L, but doesnt he need to learn how to drive it first?? It's not something you can really "teach yourself".......Well I guess with enough time you could...Possibly, but I wouldnt recommend it.

But then again, what do I know.

Uturn2001 07-10-2008 03:22 PM

even if he could find a truck to borrow or rent he would also need someone with a Class A CDL to go with him to the testing site. Can't do it on his own with only a permit.

And for the record, no Illinois does not provide vehicles for any road test.

Double L 07-10-2008 03:44 PM

None taken Jim, I don't think any state for that matter provides vehicles for the road test that I know of. Thank ya again Uturn I will give CJ Driving Training a call and see what they say.

I don't know if Double L already knows how to drive a rig or not. By his response, I offered an idea. Lots of N. Michigan guys know how to drive tractors, backhoes, caterpillers, etc. at a young age.

At the time, I didn't realize Star Rental is not in Illinois. Here in Michigan, Star will provide the Tractor/Trailer, insurance and the examiner...for about $250.
They also offer instruction by the hour, as well as they have a school you can enroll with.

Assuming you already know how to drive...you just show up at the yard, the day of your exam. The schedule for the exam usually takes a couple weeks. The examiner will set up a course at the yard. You do your pre-trip, and then the 4 basic course maneuvers, and then he jumps into the rig with you and off you go to do your road test. Takes about two hours all together.

All you need prior to your exam is a photo drivers license, training permit, (issued by the Sec. of State when you pass your written) and a D.O.T. Med card.

I don't know if there is a company like Star Rental in Illinois or not.

I don't know Double L's particular circumstances, or limitations. I don't know how many companies will even hire an 18 year old driver. But there is work available for a determined young man. Up here Construction and Farms will hire for limited duties, and I've seen young guys working the yards, and shuttling trailers to be loaded. I have enough trouble keeping up with the details of my own life, but I trust Double L to make good decisions, from what I have learned about him.

Double L has been on this message board a while asking questions and learning, and I think that is great. Reminds me of Mack2. Another young driver who has his shiet together at a young age.

Good luck and God bless Double L. Good to see you again... :D

Double L 07-11-2008 05:11 AM

I been calling alot of dump carriers and they told me you had be 21-23 with experience. Now that was a shocker! I figured that would be the easiest place to get a driving job. But like I said Mid-West Sanitary hires at 18 and it's just a matter of getting my CDL. I also called Peterbilt since my application is still on file to see what they have available. I still got a sour taste in my mouth from Ee-Jay.

Double L 07-11-2008 08:49 AM

Well good news, I'm going to get the Class A permit Tuesday.

Jimbpard 07-11-2008 10:43 AM

So, did you get it?

Double L 07-11-2008 10:55 AM

No job yet but like I said I'm going Tuesday to get my permit and figure things out from there.

WarHorse 07-11-2008 02:39 PM

Keep working at it, something will come through.

Good to see you back. :)

BanditsCousin 07-11-2008 06:59 PM

I'd tell you to go to a HHG agent in St Louis, but I already mentioned that. I got my permit on my own for 60 bucks (IL state fees) and used an Atlas Van Lines truck. When summer comes to an end, this option's door may close for you.

Just sayin

Double L 07-12-2008 03:47 AM

Actually the permit is $50 and $60 to get the CDL.

BanditsCousin 07-12-2008 05:08 AM

This is true. They charged me 60 at the permit, but I didn't have to pay at the road test.

Double L 07-12-2008 05:22 AM

I'm surprised commerical drivers don't have to go under a background yet except for Hazmat.

HHG sucks. Anyone who has hauled any HHG ever in their life is a fool.

Double L 07-12-2008 08:09 AM

After using my pick up to help a couple people move, HHG isn't for me.
