Help With Shifting Question??
 

hey board long time no post, heres the problem, when i am at a red light i got the tractor in nueteral, when i try to put it in gear 2 or 3 or 4th to launch it grinds like hell, i thought it was the truck but i recently switched to a new truck and the same crap, so im wondering if ive developed a bad habit or what.....once i get going the rest of the gears float right in, is it an RPM issue? or do i just suck.

When was the last time the clutch was adjusted.
From a stand still, engaging the transmission requires depressing the clutch all the way to the floor to activate the clutch brake. If the clutch brake is not "engaging" putting the truck in gear when stationary...can be nearly impossible.

Catch your "start off gear" as your slowing down to a stop, then just keep the clutch depressed with it in that gear til you're ready to start off again. That's how I do it.

Of course if you're going to be stopped for more than a minute or so (for a RR crossing or traffic jam for example) then you won't want to keep the clutch depressed that long, but for normal stops & starts it works great.

just get an automatic :D :D

I agree with Drew. Sounds like a clutch issue to me.

Make sure you have the clutch all the way to the floor when shifting from neutral to any gear when at a complete stop. If this does not remedy the problem then you need to have your clutch examined at the shop and adjusted or replaced as needed.

BTW there is a saying: Out of gear, out of control. Unless you have your parking brake set your truck should always be in gear.

he said it happens on every truck he drives which indicates driver error. I would bet that he sits at the light in neutral and when it turns green, he tries to hurry up and put it in gear and go. I know a couple of drivers who insist on doing that and they have the same problem..

Do this.

When comming to a stop, leave the truck in gear until you STOP! (Use clutch so you dont stall).
THEN, ONCE STOPPED, split it to the low side, and select your starting gear. This will solve your problem.

What you are doing is taking it out of gear and putting it in neutral WHILE the truck is still moving. Thats what is creating your problem.
