Texas night/day speed limits
 

Hey guys, can anyone tell me what what time of the day Texas considers it to be night time or day time? Was wondering because of their night/day time speed limits of 70 during the day and 65 at night. Now my codriver and I have been arguing for days now of when we can do 70, you mostly see this on I10 and I20. I told my codriver that as soon as I see the entire sun is over the horizon I consider it to be daytime and I then set my cruise control at 70 and when I see the sun go down over the horizon I then obviously set my cruise at 65 for the night. He says thats wrong and I can get a ticket but me being thick headed dont believe him, so can anyone enlighten me??? Thanks

The night time speed limit is in effect from dusk till dawn. Doing it the way you do it you will not have to worry about a ticket.

Depends on the line of site!

In some places in Texas like here in the SW Panhandle it is all flat land.. So dusk and Dawn you know when the sun starts coming up and going down,, It can get really hard to see.. Shadows dance, heat mirages, moisture if any is a big player also..
So I think and pretty sure that it is in the discretion of the DOT, as to when it is safe to do 70 or 65.. Some Farm to market roads are 65 for trucks during the day, and 55 at night so be careful.. And also they are pretty lenient on the dusk till dawn thing, but once it is dark and it is plain to see. they are not so lenient..


I know this doesn't help much-- But just use caution, if you can't see that well during these times slow down.. Better to be safe that sorry and get a ticket or worse kill someone or yourself..

It's easy to tell when Dusk and Dawn are: Just look for the vampires.

I didnt realize there was a difference. If I do 65 at night everyone passes me.

Good rule of thumb is bring 'er down when you put your lights on for the night and the sunglasses come off :D

Legally, it is 30 minutes after the sun sets and 30 minutes before the sun rises.
