Whataburger

So I've seen these white, orange and blue burger places on every street corner in texas. A friend of mine told me that I absolutely needed to go in a get a burger as it will be the best fast food burger ever. This afternoon while bored out of my mind in Laredo, I took a drive downs Mines to get something to eat and saw a Whataburger with a good size lot to park the truck in.

First off, The burger and fries were not bad, but it wasn't that great either. It must be because I'm from california, but not one fast food burger joint has anything on In-n-out.

I have almost all together quit eating fast food but I set aside one day a week that I eat at a fast food place, usually taco bell :P Now I'm upset I wasted my one day on this crap...doh!

 I used to go to them back in the 80's, when I lived in Corpus Christi.
Mel Tillis owned and started them.
With a Texas drawl...it's called "Waterburger."

...but I mainly got the egg and potato breakfast burritos,
with a side of jalapeno's.

mmmmmmmmmmm....jalapeno's...drool http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l2...ling_homer.gif

My Texas favorite though, was "Luby's."

dle 06-02-2008 02:29 PM

Say what?

Mel Tillis didn't start whataburger. It was started in Corpus Christi and that is still their national headquarters.

A man by the name of Harmon Dobson started it in 1950.

Double L 06-02-2008 02:39 PM

Regardless of who started it y'all making me hungry. :P

Roadhog 06-02-2008 02:53 PM

Sorry...too many years ago for me to remember :P
Mel did lots of Whataburger commercials.

I have to agree completely. I purposely went to a Whataburger on the advice of someone from Texas who wouldn't shut up about them. I was disappointed. The fries were nothing special at all, and the burger was only marginally better than typical fast food burgers.

If you ever get up into the Wisconsin/Illinois/Michigan/Minnesota area, I do strongly recommend stopping at a Culver's. Order a Butterburger with cheese. Much better than the Whataburger.

dle 06-02-2008 04:30 PM

Sorry, but If I want a real burger I go to whataburger.

I grew up in Corpus Christi and on Whataburger's, and tex-mex food.

Syncrosonix 06-02-2008 04:32 PM

all i remember from whataburger is that i had a serious case of "the runs" a few hours after dining of their crap-ass burgers. i had to quickly pull over on the side of a busy freeway during the night and let'r rip as i wedged myself between the drive tires on the passenger side. in-n-out is nothing special either. their concrete mix shakes are the only thing i consider to be worthy of my money.

x2. He thinks it is the cat's meow  I was in Harlingen and went and it was so/so.

x2 on the Culver's.

I am a fan of In-N-Out. White Castle is pretty good, for what it is. It isn't a meal to savor, more like glutton on.

For you Southerners, Krystal is White Castle w/o chilli dogs

If your in west texas or new mexico you can't beat an Allsups chimichanga.

Twilight Flyer 06-03-2008 06:08 AM

Rev, we've got a Culvers right here in Coralville. Their burgers aren't too bad, but the rib-eye steak sandwich is better and the fries are tops, no doubt. But I think the best thing Culvers has going is the Walleye dinners and sandwiches, when walleye is in season. Mmmmm.mmmmmm.

So, now that you've called out el'Capitan on his Whataburger fixation, is he going to come over here to argue with you? Am I going to have to earn my pay again? It's been awfully quiet lately, so I'm just trying to get an accurate forecast of CAD weather.

:P

movinit 06-03-2008 06:23 AM

Whataburger AND In-n-out are like most things from two very conceited states that think only their state can produce anything great and if it isn't their way then it should be no way. Both are are over rated and lousy!

Twilight Flyer 06-03-2008 06:41 AM

I still like Burger King's Double Whopper with cheese as the tops in the actual BURGER category, even over a any of the high-end restuarant burgers I've had.

That and the Brawny Lad from the old the Big Boy's restuarants. Now those were the days.

*sigh* :?

I'm not fond of fish. Their chicken, however, is top notch. I love the Jumbo Butterburger with cheese. The thing is as big as my head.

I called him out years ago on that and many other things. He is like a broken record on that crap.

I'm trying. Cut a guy a little slack. Sheesh.

White Castle's have the best onion rings. I can't say that they would get my vote as the best burger, but sometimes you get a craving for the rat burgers. After 3 of them though, I've had enough.

On the upside, they are really cheap.

Culver's is in Indiana and Ohio as well. I took the fam to Culvers last weekend. I got the double cheddar butterburger and a scoop of chocolate raspberry custard.

The burger was unbelievable.

Sorry, but wrong! Harmon Dobson opened the first Whataburger on August 8th, 1950 in Corpus Christi! The 5th franchise was opened in 1953 by Joe Andrews Sr. in Alice, TX. The first one out of the state of Texas was in 1959 in Pensacola, Florida by the original owner, Harmon Dobson!

No where in can did I ever find in the History of Whataburger, did I find Mel Tillis owning the rights. He may have had a franchise locations somewhere, but he did not start or own the Whataburger Corporation!

Tom Dobson, son of Harmon Dobson is still the CEO!

They still make a great burger, the way you like it! Fries have digressed a bit!

Sorry, did a paper on them when studying Business way back in High School.

shyykatt 06-05-2008 05:42 AM

Culvers...mmmm; their concrete mixers are YUM

Roadhog 06-05-2008 02:42 PM

countryhorseman...

Yes sir...I did a half-ass apology in my 2nd post on this thread. I'll offer the rest of that apology;....... :)

my memory did not serve me as well as Whataburger did back in the early 80's.
I remember all the ads on TV were done by Mel. (at the time) How I confused myself on his role, has me questioning many things now.
Back in the 80's ....weren't they experimenting with subliminal messaging, using TV commercials? :?
In the future, I'll try not to use my memory for facts...just where I ......ummmmmm...where I... ahhhhhh ... * *
 :?:

countryhorseman 06-05-2008 03:32 PM

Wow, there was a huge gap between when I actually posted that, and when it showed up on the thread! It should have posted before your second one.

Must have been one of those subliminal things! :-)

I remembered the adds going down the road earlier today, he was pretty good with them, much better than the ones today!

anyhow, catch ya later!

in-n-out lousy? Hardly,in-n-out is probably the most consistent and delicious fast food place for burgers out there hands down. You can go to an in-n-out any time of the day and the drive thru will have at least 8 cars in it and the parking lot FULL.Their employees are also the highest paid among any fast food chain,I believe theyre starting out at $10 an hour, which is more than most OTR drivers, when you add up the hours spent.lol.

Phantom433a 06-07-2008 04:57 AM

We have Whataburger AND In-n-out here in Prescott....Whataburger isn't that good and IMHO In-n-Out is over priced. Ralleys in the midwest is good, but messy as hell (also have one in Phoenix). Fast food isn't my favorite food anyway. I do enjoy stopping in Wikieup, az on the 93 south of Kingman and eating at Joes BBQ. Joe and Rose did stack trucks and they take care of drivers. Its on the left side at the north end of town. If you ever stop their......its a bit costly but GOOOOOOOOOOOOD. Used to be you could get Joe on the radio and order your food before you got there.

golfhobo 06-07-2008 05:33 AM

GREAT directions, driver! You should be a dispatcher!

But, I suppose that would be determined by which WAY a trucker was heading!

I agree entirely on the conceitedness of both Texans AND Californians! The only thing BIGGER than their hats in Texas.... is their EGO's!!

In N Out has a "decent" burger at a good price.... but those fries are nothing special! I was inside one recently, and the "lackey" kept dishin' them up BEFORE they were even ordered and covering them with a napkin to keep 'em warm. When they became the 9th basket sittin' there, he dumped 'em BACK into the oil to heat 'em up again!

TASTED like it, too! :x

Whataburger's are actually not too bad for fast food! Been awhile since I'd had one until I started trucking. They haven't changed much over the years since I "dwelled" in Texas! (which is more than I can say for the other fast food empires!)

But, NEITHER are "all that!"

I WOULD tell y'all where the BEST burgers are..... but, that was another thread!

THIS one is about a fight between Whataburger's and In N Outs!! And, that's pretty much like a mudwrasslin contest between two fat ole ladies!

But, I DO love Texas and Kalifornia!! Without those states, where would be send all the Braggots and Faggots???
