Ok lets play a game.....

I just got an email from a driver answering one of my ads and wants a job. His email was as follows: I need a new job badly, the company I work for only pays 10 cpm. I think I can make more. I have a little less than a year experience.

Ok...thats all I know about him. He hasnt got back to me yet telling me his history. Here is the game....who can guess whats wrong with him?

Rollover accident that resulted in vehicular homicide conviction. He fled the scene and also has a hit and run conviction and an abandonment on his DAC.

Reminds me of a phone call I had when I first started recruiting. A real fruity voice asks me if I would have a problem hiring Crossdressing drivers. I about started laughing and then thought to myself....hell, 500 bucks commission is 500 bucks, why do I care what the driver wears. So I asked him/her if he could at least dress like a man during orientation. I cant imagine what would happen while he was sharing a hotel room with a big Billy bob man trucker. He said, "No, I wont change who I am for anyone" So I wouldnt hire him.

I think I saw that guy on an episode of COPS in Albuquerque, NM. He was wearing some kind of leopard outfit and panty hose. Priceless.

Let me get this straight.

I drive 150-300 miles per day, 5 days a week. I'm guarantee $1500 per payday, and I normally make more, and I'm paid on the 15th and last day of the month. I also get the normal bennies.

How does that equate to .10 cents per mile?

You're damm right I will.

First, he's a hard worker, so he deserves a decent pay. If he can get a hazmat, then he can't be that bad.

Second, I have seen a number of people on this board with far worst crimes and driving records driving for many companies.....and I bet you know of a couple who work for your company as well.

Third. And this is important. He didn't try to include me into some stupid game. Next time, leave me out.

Roadhog 02-19-2008 10:14 PM

Josborn, I apologize.

I meant the reference to a prior nemesis "joking" with Sheepdancer.
I read your posts, ..income had nothing to do with the point of the humor.

Anyway, I think the game is fun....and I still hope I win. :)

Mack2 02-20-2008 03:05 AM

He did this.

Ok I just got off the phone with the driver. Funny, I actually tried to recruit this guy one time at JB...couldnt get him on then either..lol. IT wasnt that bad. I should be able to get this guy a job....well.......Um NEVER.

Drumrollllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll lllllllllllllllllllllllllll....................... .................................................. .................................................. .......................................

Busted selling crack and did 2 years in prison about 3 years ago. Still on parole for 7 more years. He actually got a little offended when I told him that he needs to get completely out of truckdriving and deliver pizzas or something. Which I find strange. Hes making 10cpm, getting about 2000 miles a week = 200 bucks a week. and his family is about to leave him.
Pizza delivery guy = around 15 bucks an hour with tips. Oh well, I dont think he has a habit of making the right choices in life.

Roadhog 02-20-2008 04:55 AM

:? What the hell... you mean Swift won't take him? :P

Believe it or not even Swift is being really picky right now. I have drivers waiting on trucks because they are full.
I tell you, times have changed. EVERYONE is being picky and is looking for a better quality of driver.

Twilight Flyer 02-20-2008 07:05 AM

It's amazing how much the market has changed just over the past 6 months. For several years there, it was a driver's market. There was a perceived driver's shortage (which was actually just a shortage of qualified drivers) which made it a driver's market to the core. A driver could go practically anywhere, regardless of what his past history looked like.

Today, it's changed 180 degrees. Companies are being extremely picky and some are simply not hiring at all right now. I work with a number of outside recruiters and they're all telling me the same thing. Drivers simply do not have their pick of the litter anymore and a lot are having a hard time getting on even with lower-tier carriers.

Of course, it'll change again. The hiring market runs in cycles and right now, it's some lean times in the industry. Most of the people in the know are projecting these difficult times to extend into next year yet. A year of this will put so many small to midsize companies out of the game and there are a few big ones (including some LTL companies) that are on the ropes, too. Like it or not, it's survival of the fittest and when it's all over, it'll help drive up frieght rates, driver wages, and driver perks again and once again, companies will be fighting over drivers and drivers will have their pick of the crop.

And the cycle will continue...
