Actually those tests are very easy. All the questions are based on the section in your South Carolina Commercial Driver License Manual. If it is written like Michigan's, the whole chapter is broken into sections, and there is a Test Your Knowledge at the end of each section of study. It says "these questions may be on the test."
You want to really study this chapter and if you can't answer the subject questions, go back and study that some more. Bottom line is any question on the State test is based on the information in this Manual, and if you can answer every question asked at the end of each section, you will pass easily. If you happen to fail, you can retest again one more time that day, or come back another day and try again. No matter how much you learn about HazMat, there is going to be so much to have yet to learn. Any company you haul for should give you specialized training in the HazMat product you will be working with. If you are serious about working HazMat... go enroll in a HazMat Awareness class, and once through that, continue on to your Operations Level...at a basic minimum. This is for your safety, and others. You can quickly and permanently hurt yourself working with these products. I haul Reefer for Fruit Processing Plants. I have seen chemical injuries...and it is scary stuff. We use Anhydrous Ammonia to flash freeze fruit. A forklift operator clipped an Anhydrous Ammonia valve, and 1/3 of this huge Facility exploded into rubble. The blast shook my house 20 miles away. As a Firefighter, I responded to the scene, and there were more explosions, and fire. The area of a football field was rubble and flames when I got there. Truckers are working next to HazMat products many times without even knowing it, by bumping a dock at some Plant, to load or unload. The more you become aware of your surroundings and have the ability to recognize a Hazard, the better, for you. |
thanks for the info im going to study the book for a couple of weeks the reason im wanting it is tha i hope to get on with a ltl company or maybe wal-mart ive talked to wal mart and they said ive got to have it the app is filled out and they said to send it in when i get hazmat
and yes im carful now and will be more careful when hauling any hazmat loads |
Well if you have time now to take a class... I highly recommend it. Once you are driving, you won't find time for that later. The company should hopefully provide training, but whether it is sufficient training... I don't know.
Call this outfit back up, and ask them if once you have the endorsement, what specialized training will you be able to get through the company, and what is involved. I'd be real curious about that, if I were you. Call your community college, and/or the Training Officer at any Fire Station in your area, and ask when and where HazMat Awareness Level classes will be held. That is the basic training. The next level is Operations Level. You really only need the Awareness Level as a driver...and you won't regret having this additional training. It will make that State manual test seem ridicules. You may think...well, I'll only haul some solvents, or cleaning products listed as Hazardous, maybe some batteries. Maybe these loads are not going to endanger the public necessarily, but the dangers to you can be high. Mixing certain products on a load is illegal, or in the event of an accident, can cause major problems. Some products you need to understand how they react with others or if they catch on fire what to do, how to contain...etc. It is a very involved specialized field of trucking. I agree with the concerns everyone has stated. Anyone can add the endorsement. That helps the company...but what will they do to prepare you? You need to be real concerned. |

Okay, I was afraid you were going to say that.
...and I know the feeling. :? Having the endorsement does open doors...no doubt...and you should have no trouble getting the endorsement, if you just study that one chapter in your manual. You definitely have time for that. Were talking just a matter of hours and you'll be ready to take the written exam. It is a short exam, and if you fail it...see which questions tripped you up, go study the manual another hour and retake the test right away. It's so easy...a Caveman can do it. If you pull for Wally...what's the worst HazMat they have? Ladies makeup  .... draino? FireHouse Chili? I'd love a USF job myself...good luck..and Happy New Year. |

I've never thought about that. I wouldnt say this to anyone, but I've always wondered why you need a HAZMAT to drive for Wal-Mart. I guess it would be for all that perfume, and spray cans stuff. :P |
