2 tags on the tractor or 1?
 

Today I and another driver made our way up from Nashville to western New Jersey for a show this weekend. I left my truck at the show grounds and the other driver dropped his trailer, and we rode together in his truck to the hotel a few miles down the road.

A NJ state trooper pulled us over because his truck didn't have a tag on the rear of the vehicle. The truck is from a leasing company in Nashville and our lease agreement is for less than 30 days. The truck is registered in Tennessee and the state of TN only requires one tag on the truck on the front bumper.

The NJ trooper said "I dunno what TN requires but I've never seen a truck here in Jurzie without a tag on the back..." and let us go with a verbal warning.

So, when we're up here in the north, and we bring trucks registered in TN up here from down there, are we required to put on a second tag to be legal in these states? My guess is no, and that even if this guy gave us a ticket, it would be real easy to dispute, but I'd like to hear from someone in the know. Thanks!

I've never seen a truck with a tag on the back , just on the front bumper

If the truck is registered in a state that only requires 1 tag either on the front or the back, then that is all you need anywhere you go. Another state may be dumb enough to give you a ticket for it but they are in the wrong because the vehicle is not registered there. I think every state requires a rear tag but for a semi it may be different in some states since a trailer is in the way.

I have a tag on the front and back of my truck in VA.

I've only ever seen twin tags on tractor units with Canadian and Mexican registration.

West Virginia requires a rear tag on vehicles (no front tags). However, on tractor trailers there is only a front tag on the tractor.

South Dakota, and Kansas runs tags on back. Or, atleast I know they used to.

I've only driven one truck that wasn't registered in Virginia, and have never seen a tag on the back. Don't have a tag on the back of the truck registered in TN either.

I've noticed trucks from other states (not sure which states; I didn't take notes) that had a tag on the back of the sleeper in addition to, or instead of the front tag (I didn't take notes on whether they had a front tag either.)

It probably just varies by state, the way Virginia and a couple of other weird states require license plates on the front of fourwheelers.

I've noticed dump buckets, garbage trucks, etc. don't have plates on the front in Virginia, but they do have them on the rear, always covered in gruck and totally indecipherable. Stupid if you ask me. Let's put the plate right under the ass end of this truck that dumps asphalt all day, and see if it gets any black gruck on it.

Your right silvan, it's dumb. My rear one is nearly unreadable from dumping broken up concrete and having it roll forwards into the tag.

I droppred a trailer in Georgia and bobtailed bout a mile up the road....local pulled in behind me and asked why I was missing my rear tag....answer....its not requierd where my truck is registered due to the fact that a trailer is usually there....his response was "oh theats cool, never noticed before, probably because theres always a trailer. Have a good night"

We have a terminal in Rahway, NJ... I've been there a number of times with my front tagged only tractor...registered in IL, never had a problem. The majority of the states only use a front tag. I think the local was bored. He would have found out later that if he written the ticket....it would be thrown out.

The State of Washington I believe requires both front and rear, and you will see their tags on the backs of sleepers on trucks registered there....if I am not mistaken.

FL requires a front tag only.
