07.09.99 i hit a car with my yanaha on I-5 in seattle and couldn't work for 3 1/2 months could walk for 2 of that, i had to stay with firends as my house wasn't wheelchair frendly. he had no Insurance and i was under insured. no income for 3 1/2 months yet i paid all my bills for my house and helped my firends with rent & food and i didn't go into debt to do it.! how you ask well i had this little thing called MONEY in the bank. Also, sorry if I confused you with anyone else... The posts were so long, they eventually just seemed to meld one into the other... I think I was a bit tired, when I first read them...  If you buy used vehicles that's one thing. But, from your post it appeared you had bought a "new" vehicle for your step son... Also, you didn't explain that he had been "earning" the vehicle in other ways. It just came across as you just gave him a car, period. So, not looking for an arguement, I'm just responding to what I read... I would also just like to add, that if you buy a new vehicle it is cheaper in the long run to own, then buying a used vehicle... I bought my vehicle brand new, cash you could say, since they wouldn't take $16,400.00 in cash, I had to give them a check... But, still bought, and paid for my vehicle outright, no loan, nothing. Had title in hand the day I brought it home. I've owned it 18 years now, and as I believe I stated before it now has cost me less than $1,000.00 per year to own... When you buy used, you don't know what your getting. It can be a lemon, it can have mechanical problems your not aware of, etc... It can end up costing in mechanical repair costs in some cases more than the vehicle is worth... I don't know how many years you saved before you bought your car with cash. Which you stated you sacrificed your opportunities to go out to clubs with friends, and ate a malnourishing diet for a period of time. But, you shouldn't have to "suffer" in other ways, just to be able to afford to buy anything... That's the point I'm making as well... Everyone in this country should be able to make a decent wage So, that said, if wages are actually decreasing while inflation, and cost keep rising, if anyone can find a way to save "serious" money, without it hurting them (suffering), to do so, then they are lucky... This isn't supposed to be a pain/pleasure situation. It was always said, that if you worked hard, you could make a good living, in this country. Well, there are many who do work hard, and they still have situations that they could not have predicted, that have set them back financially, such as illness, death in the family, injury, disability, etc... Also, if you are married, you are fortunate because regardless of the jobs, you for the most part these days have a two income family... If you are single, you are screwed... They take the most taxes out of those who are single, housing, whether rental, or, purchasing a home is very expensive, that unless your in the 1% of the population making those millioins, and nowadays, Billions. Your not going to have it easy to save much, for anything... A lot of what happens in life too, also is a matter of being in the right place, and the right time. Not everyone will get the opportunities, or the breaks, others may be fortunate to have come their way... Then again, depending on where you grew up, and the educational system provided, would also affect what your were taught in public school... There are children who attend private schools, and Ivy league schools, they are going to have advantages that for the most part, the general population won't receive. Also if you come from a poor rural area your public schools won't be as good, as those in more suburban, areas. We all know that is a fact of life in this country. Equal opportunity just isn't the case in fact if you look across this entire nation, in regard to education. When I was in public school, the schools didn't really focus much on girls, and their needs for a good education. They assumed that they would all end up getting married, and raising families, once they reached adulthood. Girls were not prepared to go onto college either. So, you can't say that everyone got an equal start in their educational life, in this country. Back when I was a kid, most woman married, and stayed home, raising their kids, while the husband was the "bread winner"... That isn't the case these days. Even toward the end of the 70's, it was clear that even married woman were going to have to take up jobs, to help support their families. They are now in their early, to mid 60's... My Dad is semi retired, but, he will still have to work... He's already told me that, even with his own business. Because he didn't grow the business into something that could be "taken over" by others for him to truly retire. He created his business, and made it a "one man show"... Doing it on his own, no employees... That was his choice, and he will pay the price for that choice... Some people I think also look at life in different ways, thinking they should enjoy life now, before they get to old to enjoy it. Those who think they should save for retirement, then enjoy life. But, often times either die before they get to retire, or, are too ill by then to enjoy the fruits of their labor. So, it very much depends on which end of the spectrum you are from... Depression era people saved, 60's era people lived up to that song "live for today"... Today, it is difficult to do either... You have the attitude that reminds me of something my father once said... He was asked if you, and your children went overboard on a boat, who would you save?... He said, he would save himself, and my mother... When asked why?... He replied, because you can always have more children... That is kind of how your looking at society, it is save yourself, at the expense of the other guy... In the long run, what goes around, comes around. There may come a day, you could find yourself in such a situation, then who will you reach out too?... Most importantly, who will be there willing to save you?... But, hey, if you've got all the bases covered, then I'm sure you'll have nothing to worry about, and your life will continue to be one of optimism, and true happiness. Just remember those you discard in society usually are the ones who try to rob from you, take your life, and all because basically they were denied the same opportunities you were fortunate to have obtained. That's why there are millions in prison, and we all know that most of them get out of prison eventually, only to re-offend... If you don't do things right, and equally from the start, then you will never truly have a healthy, well adjusted, peaceful, and productive society... Look at the horror stories of who end up caring for the elderly, in nursing homes, etc... The low wage earners, with little education, caring for you in your most vulnerable state, elderly, possible ill, disabled, etc., and having to rely on them for your vital daily needs. If you remember some stated 9/11 happened because you had low wage workers in security positions at airports... Remember, no man is an island... the long and short of it all is that most people want it all NOW and pay for it later "90 days is NOT the same as cash" i paid my way through school (no loan) as did my brother. it's called work....... i have owned rentals and made money, i've started companies and made money, and i've had all the toys i wanted or want also i moved out when i was 17 and never EVER not paid my own way. it's all about the choices we make in life good ones and you will have a good life bad ones and life will suck and you will be blaming others for the way your life ie... victums mentality "oh poor me the world is against me....!" |
EXACTLY FLOOD! I couldnt have said it better myself. I hate the fact that we are seeing more and more of the victim mentallity.
In this country NO ONE HOLDS ANYONE BACK. NO ONE KEEPS ANYONE FROM SUCCEEDING. People hold themselves back and then look for someone to blame. Its much easier for someone to pass the blame that look at their own life and accept the blame. Personally, Im also tired of the people in this country (cough cough liberals) who are there handing out excuses like candy. As long as someone is giving out excuces to the financial failures of this country, those financial failures are going to be there eating up those excuses and not even trying to change. Once you stop handing out excuses, people will be forced to look deep at their own lives and then realize that THEY control their financial success. Im also tired of the old liberal mantras: "It could happen to you" and "You are just one paycheck away from being homeless". NO IT WONT HAPPEN TO ME! And NO I WILL NEVER BE HOMELESS. Why? Because everyday I wake up and CHOOSE to do what it takes for that not to happen. Its called having "forward thinking skills" In other words...PLANNING AHEAD. Some peoples idea of forward thinking and planning ahead is on thursday planning what bar they are going to spend money at on saturday. Me....and Im sure flood was the same way, at 18, I was already planning for when I was 60. And you know what? When you make a few sacrifices and save a little when you are young, things get really easy when you are middle aged. Im 42 now, Im just a typical middle class american, Im not rich by any means. My wife doesnt have to work. My kids are in pretty expensive priavte schools, All of our cars are paid for. I live debt free except a couple of mortgages. All of this is possible because I CHOSE it. Not because I was lucky, not because my father gave me a nice car at 16 and not because anything was handed to me. I GAVE THIS TO MYSELF AND MY FAMILY. Ok off my soapbox....lol...Im kinda passionate about this stuff. |
i forgot somthing christmass will be DEC 25 this year i already have MONEY for it and i don't go cheap but the good thing is in JAN i don't have to think about paying for it

Sorry about that Flood... I didn't put in my post SheepDancer's name, where it needed to go, that's why you got confused at a point in my last post...
I couldn't look back to all he had stated, as well as you. So, I tried to combine the two... Unfortunately, I suppose I was not successful. But, well, at least I said, what I wanted to say... I will say this though, it is easier for a man to make his way financially, then for many woman. Now, before you get "passionate" about my statement. Let me explain. You stated you got married, and had kids. It has been, and in most respect's still is traditional for a man to ask a woman to marry him. You don't see many woman picking out a man, then asking the man to marry them... Though there are a few who have done so... While you were out working to build your businesses, etc., your wife was home taking care of your home, and your children. You don't find many woman able to do the same... Rarely, does the husband stay home and raise the kids, while the wife builds a business, etc... It simply hasn't been the tradition. Though again, there are a few stay at home Dad's who do care for the home, and kids, while the wife becomes the bread winner. But, for the most part, it just hasn't been the norm... I think the truth is that woman can not do it all. That they have to make choices, either become wives, and mothers, and stay at home, and raise their kids to become productive adults. Or, pursue a career, and forfeit having children, maybe even forfeit having a husband as well. But, such is life I suppose, and we all make choices. All I can say is that I wish you, and Sheepdancer very happy retirements, and hopefully all that hard work, saving, etc., pays off for you both... |
I swear I try my best to stay out of debates like this but .......sorry.........I just can't help myself.
First a little back-ground: 1997: 3 year old son and a daughter born with a metobolic disorder GSD ( Gylcogen Storage Disease type 1a ). Wife and I both had good long term jobs and insurance. 1999 both of us lost our jobs and our income went down about 75% overnight. We cut back, made plans and then worked the plan. 2001: We used our home equity to invest in rental property. ( I DO NOT suggest this for anyone because we came real close to loosing it all ). We now have the equity line paid off and have a positive cash flow on the rentals. It is not alot but they will be paid off in 2016. I'll be 55 at the time and they will equal my income where I am now. My house will be paid for in 3-1/2 more years. ( But son will be going to college about that time. ) I swear to GOD if we can make it happen then anybody can do the same for themselves. It's funny, I drive a 1988 Suzuki Samari to work every day. I bought it in '94 to pull behind our motorhome. I drive it to save on gas as I drive 60+ miles round trip each day. ( 33+ mpg ). And I see my co-workers drive in in their NEW '06-'07 trucks and complain about how their broke. |

I have NEVER seen anyone that has more excuses as to why they are in the position they are in. First it was injury. Now it is because you are a woman. Good grief woman, get over it and get a life. Go pick up cans on the side of the road. At least you will be EARNING some money. Comming on these boards does NOTHING to improve your situtation. ( Unless it gets you off your A$$ to do something ) |

( Unless it gets you off your A$$ to do something ) As for my own situation, I deal with 5 different doctors not only for the injuries I suffered, but, medical complications, and other health issues post the auto accident. I can actually relate to your childrens health issues, and I'm sorry you and your family have had to endure this health issue, and I hope your children are happy, and healthy now... I can relate, because one of my "health" issues is the condition known as Metabolic Syndrome (which affects the Endocrine system), and it's related complications to my health. As far as earning a living. I have posted else where that I am currently working on developing my own business. I am actually looking forward to making it a success. So, I'm not sitting on my backside, I'm actually working to improve my life... |
