Why it's important to do things the right way

Delivery men drop £45,000 grand piano off truck

Only an idiot would try to do what they were doing, where they were doing it, and with the amount of men they were doing it with.

Well, I guess "Lewis friend" will be back, looking for another dream job!!
Looks like he and RoadRunner9501 found each other!!

Anyone see what's missing in the above picture?

I know I'd never move a piano like that - especially not such an expensive one.

Ok Rev., I give, what's missing from the pic?

The piano isn't strapped to the dolly at all. I wouldn't move a grand piano without at least 4 straps around it.

The piano pad they have around it is pathetic. It is little more than a cover. A piano of that size and value should be padded at least twice, all the way around.

Plus, the piano is longer than the lift gate. It should have been taken off the truck with a ramp.

The piano is on a frame called a shoe. That, and the fact that they removed the legs looks to be the only thing they did right. Their biggest mistakes are in using a tailgate-should have used a ramp-and trying to be smart arses and get too close to the narrowest part of the path with the dinky truck. Cockneys though, so what else can you expect?

glasman2 04-11-2007 09:38 PM

What do I see? Yes straps would be nice, but I also see the ass end is top heavy with no one at top keeping balance. If 1 of the 2 guys that were standing on the ground was up top they may have had a chance. If it was so heavy that they "needed" 2 people down below, they didn't have enough people loading it.

Over here, we call them "piano dollies", and they have hook points on them to attach straps.

Actually, it really isn't that top heavy. The heaviest side is down. The fact that it has no straps is what caused it to fall off the dolly. Once it started, there was no stopping it.

Even with 10 guys, it was still a failed operation. The piano is 9'8", and the liftgate isn't.

A shoe has its own straps on to secure a piano. You would then place the shoe onto bogeys and secure them. Unfortunately for Numpty and his friends, they forgot....
Oh well, they half managed it.

I'm glad that I found out how properly move a piano. That might come in handy someday? Maybe on earth 2?

No.... just when you give up the glory of OTR for the security of HHG!!

Then, you can quit being a Trucker, and become an "Advisor."

Some people think there is nothing more complex in life than backing up to a dock. I pity you two.

But it is complexing, I mean they have to decide to back in or nose in. That alone can put some people into an anxiety attack.

In all seriousness though could you imagine the faces of the dock workers if someone really did nose the truck into the dock. 8)

I once saw a driver get a container lifted on to his trailer with the doors facing into the back of the unit...
Wonder how the hell he got on at delivery

You must be referring to the Rev. He's the one that gets all excited over nosing into an idleaire spot! I can do either.

No, I doubt he could, since he never SEES a dock! He gets to drive into a community and pull up next to the curb! Wow! That's gotta be COMPLEX!!

RELAX, REV!! I was just joshing ya again! :

Don't know much about can hauling, but perhaps, when he drops it with the rear end butted up to a building, the doors will NOW be at the front?

Then you obviously didn't read the article. It was a woman who took the photos, as she was supervising the entire thing.

silvan 05-02-2007 12:13 PM

This probably isn't as bad as it looks.

I wish I had pictures, but I have a story to top this one for hilarity. When I was a kid, my best friend was a piano player who aspired to own his own piano, and put it in the basement, so he could play at all hours without bothering the rest of his family.

Some church gave him an old turn of the century player piano absolutely free. All he had to do was get it home. So this guy, his twin brother, their dumbass father, and I all got together one Saturday to help my friend move this thing.

We loaded it onto a little Isuzu pickup truck. I was years away from even contemplating being a truck driver at that point, but I distinctly remember making the comment "Aren't you going to strap that down, or tie a rope around it or something?"

"I don't have a rope. I'll drive careful."

"Hooookay."

So he crept all the way through town with this thing on the back of his little pickemup, and got all the way to the turn for his house. There's a little ice cream shop on the corner, and they have a black asphalt curb guard hump thingie around the perimeter of their lot. He turned too short, and ran over that hump with the back axle.

The piano went over, and made the indescribable sound of 100s of strings (there are usually three or more strings per note, times 88 notes) all going WHUMP! at the same time as the carcass of the thing was going C-R-R-R-R-ACK!

Within the blink of an eye, the piano was reduced to a pile of keys and wooden bits strewn all over the road like an exploded deer carcass.

My friend's brother and I couldn't stop laughing. It was the funniest thing I ever saw. Right out of a cartoon! But that was insensitive of us to laugh while my friend was crying. Ooops.

Dumbass should have used some straps!! Their father was a real idiot about that kind of thing. That reminds me of another time he almost killed me with a chainsaw. City boy who should never have been allowed to touch man tools.

But anyway, in the end, the piano actually survived. The soundboard was intact, and that's apparently the main thing with one of these instruments. A guy in a local band collected the pile of rubble, and somehow or other managed to build a working piano out of the wreckage, which was a truly amazing feat, considering the condition of the instrument after it hit the pavement.
