what to do.. what to do??
I told my employer last week that I was going back on the road and cited pay as the reason(true but not just that) well they came up with a pretty good offer $17.00 per hr. plus the sales bonus (big maybe)
I would gross aprox. 36K-40K year and be home every night. the bad: I spend 9 hrs a day on the phone talking with some real winners, we have 2 people to handle 6 incoming phone lines so you can see it's a fast pace and high stress. I've been talking to Crete and heard nothing but good about them SO...your opinions please |
What, exactly, do you do now?
|
well ... the first thing I'd have to ask myself ... do I have a savings account with enough money to pay my bill for the first few months ? ... $17.00 is good pay in my books ... what if you were to stay there for a few more months and soak up some of that money .. and when the weather gets better ... then go to school, get your CDL and go with the company of your choice. .... I love this profession, but your pay checks the first few months will be up and down ... this time of year the loads are slow, but will be picking back up in the spring. ..... Crete is a good company, but have you checked out CFI ? ... there also a very good company and will pay part of your schooling too.

I sell aftermarket auto body parts, fenders. hoods, lights stuff like that to body shops and over the counter. We get some real dirty/stinky people in sometimes. And can be very unpleasant
|
So basically, you sell the tong-yang crap to body shops. Body work is dirty work. As far as stinky, well, there's no real excuse for that.
I'm not trying to talk you out of anything. i just need to know as much as possible so as to make a fair and balanced decision. |
Well if you want to drive i know you can find local driving jobs that pay 17.00 an hr.++ At lest where i live they do. And be home every night.

Oh yeah.... then there's that thing about having a phone stuck to your ear all day long vs. the sights and smells of the open prairie! But wait!!! There's no open prairie when driving "local!" Hmmm.... I guess if you aren't OTR, you might as WELL be sitting in a warm office if you can make the same as you would cranking a landing gear handle in the rain! |
I 2nd that, hobo

Well if you hate your current job then change.
If it is about the money then sit down and really do the math. You did not say how many hours a week you work, but 40-45 hour would gross you around 700-800 dollars a week at your new job not counting your sales bonus. To get the same gross at lets say 38 cpm you are looking at having to drive 2100 miles a week (for the $800). Then on top of that you have all the higher expenses of being on the road such as food, entertainment, etc. So to make the same base take home you will probably need to gross $900 or more per week after "job" related expenses, which will mean 2400 miles at least per week. However if you add in that bonus, if it is decent, you will only break even at 2500-2800 miles per week, every week. Now granted, my numbers are somewhat hypothetical since I do not have exact ones to work with, but I think it should give you an idea. |
