He fulfilled my curiosity of ...what if Dick VanDyke were President.
I've been a Ford man all my life.
He'll be missed.

(he wasn't "found on road dead" was he?).....ohhh what? :? ...

President Ford was a good and decent man who served a very special purpose at an epochal time in America's history. No, he wasn't an intellectual giant, but his goodness and his decency helped heal the wounds of the hurting nation. Although he was not a genius when it came to foreign policy, or domestic or economic policy, what this nation needed at that time was a man of dignity, humility, and honor. He gave us that in spades.

Much to his credit, newly elected President Jimmy Carter opened his inaugural address by thanking his predecessor for the work that he had done in healing those wounds. Those of us old enough to remember will recall that the presidential campaign waged between Carter and Ford in 1976 was a very bitter one. Though they had serious differences in political outlooks and philosophies, they both shared a unique element of decency about them, and they both shared common elements of naivete in executing the affairs of The Oval Office and in leading the nation.

Though it came as a surprise to many when they later became the best of friends, the strengths and weaknesses that they shared most likely played a considerable role in laying the foundation for their future friendship.

Sadly, for whatever failings they had as Presidents, every administration that has followed them has been rocked by shady backroom dealings and scandal, as were many administrations that preceded them. Although Watergate was a tawdry political scandal, so many things that have happened in The Oval Office, and on Capitol Hill have made Watergate seem rather tacky, but relatively minor in comparison. One thing that Ford and Carter both gave this country were two consecutive administrations without scandal.

Perhaps now, with President Ford's passing, his legacy will be better understood and more properly appreciated.

R.I.P. Jerry Ford, & God Bless the Nation you served.

Yeah, it's still hard for me to believe that almost thirty years have passed since he left office!!

I was watching some old film footage of different speeches and addresses he gave after becoming President. Wow!!! What a trip back in time... seeing the faces of people like Barry Goldwater, Carl Albert, Tip O'Neil, Scoop Jackson, Hubert Humphrey, John Tower, Anne Armstrong, a much younger Dr. Henry Kissinger.... the years have gone by!!!
