Swift has the Best Drivers

I don't know if anyone has seen this before but I thought it was pretty funny.

?

Yeah, they teach that manuever during boot camp!

duck 09-16-2006 02:49 PM

Then again the driver might have set up to run her wide and some dumb 4wheeler decided to squeeze thru. Seen that enought times.

Niagarafallss1 09-16-2006 05:27 PM

The trailer should have been set up in the right lane to block any possible Mr. Sneaky-Man, while the tractor is in the second lane to be able to make the tight turn.

Fozzy 09-16-2006 05:41 PM

It's just ignorant and tiresome to bash drivers like this... :withstupid:

Not funny at all

That van was the safety manager trying to flag him down to let him know that there was an error in paper work, and that he wasn't cleared to drive just yet.

PackRatTDI 09-17-2006 01:06 AM

I had an accident just like that. I had to swing really wide to make the right turn and it was enough of a wide swing that, despite my turn signals being on, some guy decided to place his Jaguar in between my trailer and the curb.

But sometimes that's not always possible. In my case, had I tried to block the right lane, I'd have taken out a streetlight. As it was, even turning from the #2 lane I still was within a few feet of the streetlight.

chapchap70 09-17-2006 04:32 AM

Click on the picture and it will blow up. You will see that the right turn signal light is on. I think that if it were the brake lights that were lit, both lights on the right side would be lit. Also, the passenger side door of the tractor is open so I am assuming the driver also has exited the vehicle at this point.

Four wheelers try this stunt many times. I had a police car pass me on the shoulder one time when I was driving an oil truck with my right turn signal on and slowing down to make a right turn. When I make right hand turns in a truck, I stare into the passenger side mirror and make quick glances at the road ahead.

I"ve seen (more than once) when a 4-wheeler will even climb the curb and go on the sidewalk to pass a truck on the right when the truck is making a right turn. I've even had tractor and trailer in the turn lane and had a 4-wheeler go up on the sidewalk, run a couple of pedestrians into a building, in order to pass me. But after the corner, there was a squad car parked in his way to get back onto the street. That was funny.

More than likely his/her four way flashers are on.

swing wide itsa fargin trailer....

looks like a preventable on that guys record.

shyykatt 09-17-2006 11:50 PM

Guess I do not understand why when there is a problem/accident w/one company, that everybody jumps in to criticize it. Accidents happen - big deal. Life goes on. Ya wont be pointing the finger when it happens to you. Oh my, hope I don't sound too 'Grrr'- just making an observation. :)

The driver should HAVE been set up in the turning lane, not just a couple feet of his truck in it. And he shouldn't have even attempted the turn with a bus sitting there.

He was swung wide to avoid the bus. If he would have had some Patience, and waited for the bus to pass, he wouldn't have had to swing so far out of his lane

Bus? What picture are YOU looking at? :?:

Hat Rak 09-19-2006 06:19 PM

There is a blue school bus on the road the truck driver was turning into.

Folks, we don't see the whole picture here. The bus might have pulled up after the accident happened and was just trying to get through the scene. We also don't know exactly how tight this turn really is; the perspective from this shot does not help. He could be trying not to scrape his trailer against that right lane must turn right sign. Regardless, yes he took that turn too wide, because it allowed the 4-wheeler the opportunity to sneak into his blindspot, and he "should have been" able to see the van attempting to get run over while in the turn.

Go back and read my post. I have seen a 4-wheeler go up on the sidewalk to pass a truck that was making a right turn. I've also seen them put the right side of the car up on the curb and sidewalk to pass a truck on the right. Just a little over 2 feet from the curb with the trailer, and the car had the right side up on the sidewalk, and the left tires right next to the curb, trying to pass the truck on the right.

Of course, I've also seen a big truck make a right turn from 3 lanes to the left. Didn't think that was very smart either.

I agree with that. (to the OP) what if that was you? not funny at all. You live and learn.

I agree with Hat Rak. It's really hard to make the call from the angle the photo was taken.

And as PackRatTDI mentioned, roads/situations are different. I do what I can to execute the old "S" maneuver and make sure the trailer does its job to block an impatient driver. Some people don't pay any attention to the signs/illustrations on the trailer door about wide right turns.

And what about the right turns onto a narrow side street, and despite a wide as possible turn you find yourself blocked by a driver (with no other vehicles behind them) who, rather than backing up 15 feet, will just stare at you  .

Why resurrect a post that is six months old?

Oh sure, what a knee slapper, just think if their was a fatality involved, we would surely have a chuckle at that.

Well I was going through and looking at old posts, and this one just stood out and caught my eye, so I threw in my 2 cents. no harm =).

tdriver1959 03-04-2007 09:52 PM

I was trying to swing into a driveway had the right lane partly blocked started my turn was half way thru the turn when something it the side of the trailer. Stoped got out and looked a school bus had jumped the sidewalk. Luckily there was a witness to it.

rcso 03-04-2007 11:49 PM

You know I've had cars come up like that before to. Usually.....though I'm able to see them because I'm watching my mirrors, stop; and blast the horn at them angrily.

Hwyfly 03-05-2007 09:17 PM

The trailer does have a big turn sticker on it, but it should be bigger.....

We might have to start putting back-up alarm bulbs in the center of the trailer turning lens to keep people out of the blind zone.........

BanditsCousin 03-06-2007 05:43 AM

I'm all for bashing Swift, but that same thing almost happened to me twice last week. I blocked BOTH lanes, put the hazards on, then put the right turn signal on, THEN began making my move to get into a tight street. One time the guy went into the oncoming lane because he was in such a hurry  the other time was a work van who thought he could outrun me on the right. too bad the tractor had the whole lane blocked and I hit the air brakes, lit a cigarrette while the idiot was stuck there. Even after he backed up, i did a little surfing on the XM radio.

So, lets find some good pics of Swift trucks screwing up  This could very easily be any one of us. And as stated above, always honk the air horn angrily 8)

golfhobo 03-07-2007 03:53 AM

Well, since it has already been resurrected.....

I don't think the driver swung TOO WIDE at all. In fact, he may not have swung wide enough, bus or no bus. And he is probably not set up incorrectly or "out of his lane."

When you have a "right lane must turn right" sign it means one of (or both of) two things. THAT lane doesn't continue through the intersection, and the one immediately to the left of it PROBABLY is also marked for the option of making a right turn. (Double turn lanes.) And we ALL know, that if there are double turn lanes, we are supposed to be in the OUTERMOST one. (in this case... the left one.)

The idea, of course, is to swing wide enough that the tandems DON'T track into the inside lane, but that is often impossible. That's why we sometimes "straddle the line" and take up both lanes. At any rate.... he should have been constantly watching that right mirror set for just such an idiot.

tjv189 03-22-2007 12:25 AM

Original poster, your post just proves how much of a complete idiot you are. And I agree, that is NOT funny at all. To say that "Swift has the best drivers" sarcastically makes you sound like a moron. You think Schneider drivers, JB Hunt drivers, Werner drivers and so on so forth have never been in an accident? Stuff happens, and to let one picture make your opinion on a whole company's drivers is just wrong. Keep your stupid ignorant comments to yourself. Take this post as advice to keep you from sounding like an ass from now on bud.
