Believe it or not even Swift is being really picky right now. I have drivers waiting on trucks because they are full.Originally Posted by roadhog

The Bat Cave
It's amazing how much the market has changed just over the past 6 months. For several years there, it was a driver's market. There was a perceived driver's shortage (which was actually just a shortage of qualified drivers) which made it a driver's market to the core. A driver could go practically anywhere, regardless of what his past history looked like.
Today, it's changed 180 degrees. Companies are being extremely picky and some are simply not hiring at all right now. I work with a number of outside recruiters and they're all telling me the same thing. Drivers simply do not have their pick of the litter anymore and a lot are having a hard time getting on even with lower-tier carriers.
Of course, it'll change again. The hiring market runs in cycles and right now, it's some lean times in the industry. Most of the people in the know are projecting these difficult times to extend into next year yet. A year of this will put so many small to midsize companies out of the game and there are a few big ones (including some LTL companies) that are on the ropes, too. Like it or not, it's survival of the fittest and when it's all over, it'll help drive up frieght rates, driver wages, and driver perks again and once again, companies will be fighting over drivers and drivers will have their pick of the crop.
And the cycle will continue...
