Unknown Hitchhiker
As a 20 year rookie, I thought I had seen pretty much everything, drove the ice roads of Alaska and criss-crossed the lower 48. Two weeks ago I hear this over my cb as a truck is passing me. "hey wallboard flatbed, you need to pull over REAL fast" . I asked why I needed to pull over (there was nothing in my mirrors that looked wrong) and the response was....interesting to say the least. "You got a rider between the trailers headache rack and your load". I was 5 miles west of the rest area before Flagstaff and had stopped the night before about 70-80 miles back. When I got up and had done my walk around, thumping tires and looking at my lights.....I hadn't seen anything unusual, but when I pulled into the rest area....this homeless guy jumps down off my trailer.......when I asked him what the h3ll he thought he was doing.....his response was so simple I could have smacked my forehead and said that it made sense. HE NEEDED A RIDE. I sent off a fleet message about checking BETWEEN things on the loads (we haul the same thing out of Vegas) whenever you stop. Then called my dispatcher to explain everything to him. Unbelievable, but dispatch refused to pay me normal mileage as well as what a taxi driver would make.
