| Question: Just changed companies, and have to file the 2290 myself. It states that I must have an EIN to file it. I have been using my SSN. If I do get an EIN, do I have to change anything else, such as title, registration, etc? Or just start putting the EIN on everything from now on? |

| I was told by the IRS that you must have a FEIN number when you file your 2290. They can issue you one when you file the 2290, provided you do so in person. At one time you could use your Social Security number. I always file mine using my corporation's FEIN. You don't need to change anything else. When you get your base plates and permits the only thing they care about is that the 2290 has been paid and the vin number matches the truck that you plan on tagging. |

For the rest of us...an EIN is an Employee Identification Number. :) |

This is thinking back a long time, so I apologize ahead of time if I'm using muddled thinking... but I think we got our EIN at the IRS office when we went in to pay our 2290 for the first time.
DON'T PAY CASH if you do that, btw. They're liable to lose it and send you a notice that you didn't pay (despite the stamped "paid" receipt you've got...). Pay with a check- that way you can prove to the morons (oops, did I say that?) that you paid it.
Speaking from experience. The IRS has an entire fund of "unknown" payments- they've got the money and they don't know what it's for. I'm not kidding.
